In the disclosed control, a light source is turned on and off bistably in response to ambient light. To do this, a photoresistor or photocell, whose resistance increases with decreasing light, is exposed to the ambient light. The photoresistor or cell forms part of a voltage-energized voltage divider, and is connected across a neon lamp from which the cell is shielded. When the ambient light is sufficiently dim the lamp is lit. The current through the neon lamp is intensified with a second photoresistor or photocell in series with the lamp and subject to decreasing resistance as the lamp brightens. This constitutes a positive feedback and holds the neon lamp on. A third photoresistor or photocell in series with a switch responds to the bright lamp to turn on the switch and hence the light source. When the ambient light reduces beyond a given threshold the first photocell turns off the lamp and the second photocell increases its resistance enough to hold off the lamp.

An indicating meter with an indicating member movable over a scale provides a visual alarm when the indicating member enters a selected range of the scale. One or more light sources are provided in the meter, and the indicating member member carries one or a pair of arcuate masks, symmetrically on either side of the indicating member, and spaced by a predetermined angular or arcuate distance. The single mask or each of the pair of masks blocks light from a respective source from illuminating the scale unless the indicating member is in a respective selected range of the scale. Mask means are mounted on the meter casing, and are adjustable as to length, and these mask means cooperate with the mask or masks carried by the indicating member. The scale is translucent or transparent, and the illumination of the selected range of the scale, when the indicating member moves into such range, provides a visual alarm. If desired the visual alarm may be a colored illumination. In a modification, a photocell arranged in a suitable electronic circuit with one or more transistors is arranged to effect the illumination of a lamp when the indicating mark enters a selected range or one of two or more selected ranges of the scale.

In the power supply disclosed, a bridge rectifier receives alternating current and forms a unidirectional voltage across a filter capacitor. A thyristor in each of two adjacent arms of the bridge controls the voltage produced. A suitable amplifier biases a control potential sensed by a current sensing resistor and applies it to one side of a comparator. A sweep circuit forms a periodic waveform that remains substantially zero for one half of each period and rises during the second half of the period in a path that corresponds to the last quarter of a sine wave cycle. The comparator triggers the thyristors each time the sweep waveform exceeds the biased control potential. Each sweep period is formed during a half cycle of the input voltage, so that two sweeps occur for each cycle of input voltage.

A NONPOLARIZED, SINGLE POLE, DOUBLE THROW DRY REED SWITCH CONSISTING OF AN ELONGATED ENVELOPE WHICH CARRIES THREE REED MEMBERS, TERMINATING, RESPECTIVELY, IN FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD CONTACT ELEMENTS THAT ARE POSITIONED WHOLLY WITHIN THE ENVELOPE. THE FIRST CONTACT ELEMENT IS RESILIENT AND FLEXIBLE AND PROJECTS INWARDLY FROM ONE END OF THE ENVELOPE. THE SECOND AND THIRD CONTACT ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIALLY RIGID, PROJECT INWARDLY FROM THE OTHER END OF THE ENVELOPE AND ARE SPACED APART. THE FREE END PORTION OF THE FIRST CONTACT ELEMENT IS POSITIONED IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE SECOND AND THIRD CONTACT ELEMENTS AND NORMALLY AND YIELDINGLY MAKES CONTACT WITH THE SECOND CONTACT ELEMENT. ALL REED MEMBERS, INCLUDING THEIR CONTACT ELEMENTS, ARE HOMOGENEOUSLY FERROMAGNETIC. BY PROPER SELECTION OF PARAMETERS OR COMBINATIONS OF PARAMETERS, SUCH AS THE COMPOSITION AND EXTENT OF ANNEALING OF THE REED MEMBERS AND THE CONFIGURATION AND ARRANGEMENT OF THE CONTACT ELEMENTS, THE PRESENT REED SWITCH EMBODIES IMPROVED OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS, SUCH AS EFFECTIVE SNAP ACTION, AS COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL SWITCHES OF THE SAME GENERAL TYPE.
