    摘要: In one embodiment, a data storage system includes a magnetic head having a main magnetic pole and a wrap around shield positioned around the main magnetic pole at an ABS thereof, a magnetic medium, a drive mechanism for passing the magnetic medium over the magnetic head, and a controlling mechanism electrically coupled to the magnetic head for controlling operation of the magnetic head that initiates rewriting of information of a recording track of the magnetic medium if a recording magnetic field applied to the recording track exceeds a threshold. In another embodiment, a method includes writing data to a first track of a magnetic medium using a magnetic head, determining characteristics consistent with data degradation from tracks adjacent to the first track and far tracks away from the first track using a controlling mechanism, and rewriting data in tracks determined to be degraded due to ATI and/or FTI.

    摘要: Embodiments of the present invention provide a process that monitors a magnetic playback signal while gradually increasing an electricity supply amount for a heater to thereby determine contact between a magnetic head slider and a magnetic disk medium. According to one embodiment, after components for configuring a magnetic recording/playback portion are assembled into a housing, magnetic information is played back on a specific track of a magnetic disk medium by using a playback element while gradually increasing an electricity supply amount for a heater of a magnetic head slider. An amplitude of a playback signal is measured at a plurality of portions along a circumferential direction of the track. Contact between the magnetic head slider and the magnetic disk medium is detected in accordance with an increase in variation in the measured amplitude. Then, a value obtained by subtracting an predetermined value of an electricity amount from an electricity amount in the event of detection of the contact is stored (set) as an appropriate electricity amount for the magnetic head slider into a storage portion.

    摘要: Embodiments of the present invention help to compute controlling quantity to make the spacing between a floating head slider and a recording medium optimum without damaging the floating head slider and the recording medium by detecting the floating head slider's contact with the recording medium with high sensitivity. According to one embodiment, when the floating head slider is floating over the magnetic disk, a controller takes samples of a notable characteristic value (amplitude) from signals reproduced by a reproducing head, retains the variation of the sample amplitude as a reference signal, takes samples of amplitude from signals reproduced by the reproducing head while reducing the spacing between the floating head slider and the magnetic disk gradually, produces a signal which is the sample signal from which the reference signal is subtracted, detects the floating head slider's contact with the magnetic disk when the fluctuation of the signal so produced exceeds a reference value and, on the basis of a fly-height-control mechanism's controlling quantity at the time of the contact, computes the controlling quantity for making the spacing between the floating head slider and the magnetic disk optimum.
