    摘要: An extendable exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mounting bracket, a mirror subassembly, and a support which is supported by the mounting bracket. The mirror subassembly is supported by the support and is mounted for selective movement along the support arm to one of a plurality of viewing positions. The mirror subassembly includes a housing, a reflective element, and an actuator which supports the reflective element on a forward facing wall of the housing. The rearview mirror assembly further includes a clamping assembly which provides a force to urge frictional engagement between the housing and the support to limit movement of the mirror subassembly along the support. In preferred form, the support extends into the housing and frictionally engages an exterior surface of the forward facing wall.

    摘要: A break-away vehicle exterior rearview mirror system which is suitable for use in a vehicle, includes an exterior rearview mirror assembly including a movable portion and a fixed portion, which is adapted for mounting the movable portion to a vehicle. The movable portion includes a reflective element housed in a movable portion. An exterior rearview mirror assembly further includes a pivot member with the movable portion being pivotally mounted to the fixed portion by the pivot member for pivoting about a pivot axis from a normal operating position to a break-away position closer to the side of the vehicle. The fixed portion includes a first engagement element, with the movable portion including a second engagement element. Either the movable portion or the fixed portion generates resilient force, with the engagement elements being urged into releasable engagement with each other by the resilient force to thereby engage the movable portion with the fixed portion about the pivot axis. The second engagement element releases from the first engagement element to permit the movable portion to pivot about the pivot axis when an external force having sufficient magnitude is applied to the movable portion to overcome the resilient force, which is generated by the movable portion or the fixed portion. In addition, one of the engagement elements flexes when external force is applied to the movable portion.

    摘要: An exterior rearview mirror assembly, especially suited for towing vehicles, includes a dual purpose spring that provides a break-away feature and holds a mirror subassembly in one of a plurality of positions along a mounting arm. The exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a housing supporting a reflective element, a mounting bracket adapted for mounting to a vehicle, and an arm supporting the housing and mounted to the mounting bracket. The arm is adapted to pivot about the mounting bracket between a normal operating position and a folded, break-away position and includes a spring cooperating with the arm to selectively bias the arm into frictional engagement with the housing to hold the housing and mirror-subassembly in a fixed position along the arm and with the mounting bracket to hold the arm in one of the two positions. The bias on the arm is released when the arm is pivoted about the mounting bracket to the folded, break-away position to allow sliding movement of the housing and mirror subassembly along the arm.

    摘要: An extendable exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mounting bracket, a mirror subassembly, and a support arm which is supported by the mounting bracket. The mirror subassembly is supported by the support arm and is mounted for selective movement along the support arm to one of a plurality of viewing positions. The mirror subassembly includes a housing, a reflective element, and an actuator which supports the reflective element in the housing. The actuator is mounted to the housing by an actuator bracket. The rearview mirror assembly further includes a biasing member which urges the support arm into frictional engagement with the actuator bracket to limit movement of the mirror subassembly along the support arm. In preferred form, the biasing member comprises a plate spring having an undulating cross-section which urges the support arm into frictional engagement with the actuator bracket while absorbing manufacturing tolerances of the actuator bracket and the support arm.
