    Abstract: An airbag arrangement with a gas bag inflatable by a gas generator to protect a vehicle occupant, whose envelope defines an interior space of the gas bag that can be filled with gas, with a vent opening through which gas can flow out, with an apparatus for controlling the cross-section of the vent opening including a covering part with which the vent opening can be covered to at least partly closed. The arrangement also includes an inflatable gas duct which interacts with the covering part to vary the cross-section of the vent opening. The duct is inflatable by a secondary gas generator, which during inflation interacts with the covering part such that it changes the cross-section of the vent opening. Rotational movement of the inflatable gas duct is restricted by an extended panel secured to the gas bag, a tab anchored nearby, or both.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to apparatus for detecting a child left unattended in a car seat as well as the status of the connection between the car seat and the vehicle. The apparatus includes a sensor module and a processor. The sensor module including a sensor for measuring force data associated with the coupling between car seat and a vehicle. The processor receives and analyzes the sensor data to determine the status of the child/child seat, and then communicates status data to a caretaker. Counter-measure instructions can also be provided to the vehicle for altering the vehicle state/environment.

    Abstract: A capacitive detection system including an upper electrode printed on an upper film layer and a lower electrode printed on a lower film layer. The system includes a plurality of nodes of dielectric material printed in a spaced apart pattern on the lower film layer. The upper film layer is positioned over the lower film layer so that when a downward force is applied to the upper film layer the distance between at least a portion of the upper conductor and the lower conductor decreases. The system includes a controller operatively connected to the upper and lower electrodes. The controller includes a sensing circuit or processor configured to detect the presence of the occupant using a measure of the capacitance between the upper and lower electrode.

    Abstract: Systems and methods of shielding a hand sensor system in a steering wheel are disclosed herein. An exemplary hand sensor system includes a sensor mat and a heater mat that is disposed between the sensor mat and a frame of the steering wheel. A power source selectively provides a heating current to the heater mat to provide heat to the steering wheel and a shielding voltage signal to the heater mat to provide electrical shielding for the sensor mat when heating is not needed or when sensing takes priority over heating. Alternatively, the system may include a shield mat that is separate from the heater mat and is disposed between the sensor mat and the heater mat. In addition, to isolate the signal carried by individual sensor return wires, a metallic or insulating covering or conduit may be provided around the wires or portions thereof.

    Abstract: A system for automated speech recognition utilizes computer memory, a processor executing imaging software and audio processing software, and a camera transmitting images of a physical source of speech input. Audio processing software includes an audio data stream of audio samples derived from at least one speech input. At least one timer is configured to transmit elapsed time values as measured in response to respective triggers received by the timer. The audio processing software is configured to assert and de-assert the timer triggers to measure respective audio sample times and interim period times between the audio samples. The audio processing software is further configured to compare the interim period times with a command spacing time value corresponding to an expected interim time value between commands, thereby determining if the speech input is command data or non-command data.

    Abstract: Various implementations include a switch assembly that includes a housing and at least two printed circuit boards (PCBs) that are disposed within the housing and are axially arranged relative to each other. One or more force sensors are disposed on one of the PCBs, and, in some implementations, the one or more force sensors receive force input received by a touch overlay plate. Signals from the force sensors are processed to determine a magnitude, acceleration, and/or location of the force input, and a haptic feedback response is received by the touch overlay plate. The haptic feedback response is based on the force magnitude, acceleration, and/or location of input, according to some implementations. Axially arranging the PCBs reduces the footprint of the switch assembly and allows for the inclusion of more electrical components in the switch assembly, according to some implementations.

    Abstract: A proximity detection system for detecting motion and proximity of an occupant seated in a vehicle. The system includes a sensing electrode located proximate to the occupant and configured to transmit a signal representative of a current in the sensing electrode. The system includes a receiver including a controller and coupled to an antenna. The receiver is configured to detect a change in the transmitted signal received by the antenna based on the proximity of the occupant. The receiver is configured to determine the presence of the occupant based on the amplitude of the signal received by the antenna and the rate change of the amplitude of the signal received by the antenna. The receiver is configured to generate a control signal to change a state of a vehicle component when at least one of the amplitude and the rate of change of the amplitude exceed a predetermined threshold.

    Abstract: A force-based haptic switch panel comprises a touch plate having first and second surfaces, the first surface comprising a touch surface and the second surface opposing the first surface. The switch panel also comprises a circuit board having a plurality of force sensors electrically coupled thereto. The force sensors are disposed between the circuit board and the second surface of the touch plate, and each force sensor is configured to measure a respective portion of a force applied to the touch surface of the touch plate. The switch panel also comprises an actuator affixed to the second surface of the touch plate and configured to generate a mechanical output to the touch plate, wherein the circuit board comprises a passage for allowing a portion of the actuator to pass therethrough.
