A feederhouse force sensor senses the force exerted by the harvested crop material as it passes through the feederhouse. The feederhouse force signal is directly related to crop throughput. An operator control in the operator's cab of the combine provides a loss rate signal that is also directed to the electronic controller. The electronic controller converts the loss rate signal into a desired feederhouse force signal. The electronic controller regulates the forward speed or harvesting speed of the combine so that the desired feederhouse force signal is equal to the actual feederhouse force signal. The harvesting speed regulation can be modified or overridden by moisture signals from a moisture sensor located in the feederhouse for sensing the moisture content of harvested crop.

A combine with a throughput dependent speed control includes an angle sensor responsive to uphill, downhill and sidehill slopes. When the combine is angled from a level position, harvest speed is lowered to prevent grain losses from increasing above a target level. The control continuously learns tilt angle, loss and throughput correlation, and the speed reduction is selected based upon the learned correlation. In the preferred embodiment, throughput is estimated utilizing rotor variable drive actuator pressure (RVDAP), and a target RVDAP is modified for short periods of time in accordance with the learned correlation.

A trailer door fastener includes a T-nut and a bolt. The T-nut includes a large washer face with a hollow cylinder extending coaxially from and perpendicular to the washer face. The hollow cylinder contains internal threads running the entire length of the hollow cylinder. The bolt includes a large head with a shank extending coaxially from and perpendicular to the head. On the shank adjacent the head is a knurled portion with grooves running parallel to the axis of the shank. The remainder of the shank has external threads running from the end of the knurled portion opposite the head to the end of the shank opposite the head. The bolt is inserted through aligned holes in the hinge plate and the door panel from the outside of the trailer such that the knurled portion traverses the interface between the hinge plate and door panel. This provides a greater surface area on the bolt to withstand shear forces at the interface. The T-nut is inserted into the hole in the door panel from the inside and screwed onto the bolt. The length of the knurled portion of the bolt is custom fitted to the thickness of the door panel and hinge plate to ensure that the knurled portion traverses the interface and that the internal threads of the T-nut fully engage the external threads of the bolt.

A hydraulic sensor in hydraulic communication with the variable torque sensing drive provides an actual hydraulic pressure signal that is directed to an electronic controller. An operator control in the operator's cab of the combine provides a loss rate signal that is also directed to the electronic controller. The electronic controller converts the loss rate signal into a desired hydraulic pressure signal. The electronic controller regulates the forward speed (harvesting speed) of the combine so that the desired hydraulic pressure signal is equal to the actual pressure signal. The harvesting speed regulation can be modified or overridden by moisture signals from a moisture sensor located in the feederhouse for sensing the moisture content of harvested crop.

An optoelectronic apparatus having a measurement region (38) for detecting the presence of damaged or cracked grain kernels in a population of grain kernels which are either in a stationary or moving state at the measurement region. The apparatus comprises a short-wave ultraviolet excitation light source (20) that emits a spectral line of a wavelength shorter than 300 nm, a non-imaging photon detector (22), and wavelength selector such as a dichroic beam-splitter (28) which serves to isolate the fluorescent light emitted in a certain spectral region by the endosperm of grain from the excitation light of the light source, as well as from other sources of light. The apparatus may be mounted in a combine harvester for the purpose of detecting the presence of damaged grain kernels that have endosperm exposed while harvesting.
