Very desirable speed steps are achieved between gears in the greatest working range, and the transmission provides an elevated PTO function and auxiliary pump drives within the envelope.

A particularly compact planetary gear mechanism includes an axially shiftable ring gear to provide either a direct drive mode or a speed reduction ratio mode between an input sun gear thereof and an output planet carrier thereof. In a first embodiment, the ring gear is urged in a first direction by a compressible spring apparatus to a conjoint coupled relationship with the sun gear for direct drive. In a less frequently used mode the ring gear is urged by a hydraulically actuated annular piston closely encircling it into a fixed relationship with a stationary coupling in opposition to the compressible spring apparatus. A second embodiment has no spring apparatus so that the annular piston is hydraulically biased in either axial direction for positively shifting the ring gear. A speed reduction ratio of about 3 or 4:1 is obtained in the secondary mode so that when the planetary gear mechanism is used in a vehicle a relatively low ground speed is maintainable which is especially useful for specialized attachments such as a snow blower, broom or the like. With this construction the sun gear transmits only a relatively small proportion of the total torque during the normal direct drive mode so that an economical construction is possible.

A vehicle transmission couples a plurality of input driven planetary arrangements with a plurality of selectable direct drive gear reduction means. The plurality of input driven planetary arrangements include a reverse planetary gear arrangement and in the preferred embodiment two forward planetary gear arrangements. The reverse ring gear is coupled to the common planet carrier of the forward planet section. The direct drive section includes three drive gears in the preferred embodiment rotatably mounted on a quill shaft driven by the common planet carrier and coaxially mounted about the input shaft. Three driven gears are drivingly mounted on an output shaft, each intermeshing with a driving gear. Drive engagement devices are included to selectively engage one of the drive gears with the quill shaft.

The third countershaft has an eighth gear secured thereto which is intermeshed with the sixth gear. Ninth and tenth gears are rotatable on the third countershaft and are selectively connected thereto by a fourth clutch and a fifth clutch respectively. An input shaft (14) is connected for joint rotation with the first gear (118) and with another gear (258), a further gear (260) is rotatable on the first countershaft (22) and intermeshed with the another gear ( 258), and another clutch (262) is provided for connecting the further gear (260) to the first countershaft (22). The six rotating clutches are of the interleaved plate type, are hydraulically engaged and mechanically disengaged, and are generally internested between the walls of the housing for compactness. Up to eight forward and four reverse speeds can be obtained with but minor alterations.
