A process for making glycidyl ethers of novolac resins, particularly phenol or cresol novolacs, with low hydrolyzable chlorine and low ionic chloride content, said resins prepared by reaction of a novolac resin with epichlorohydrin in an alkaline medium, comprises dissolving the crude epoxy novolac resin in an inert organic solvent, treating the solution obtained with an excess amount of an alkali metal alkoxide, neutralizing the excess alkali with a weak acid, removing the alkali metal chloride formed by filtration in the presence of a filter aid and isolating the epoxy novolac resin by distillation of the solvent.

Epichlorohydrin levels in heat sensitive glycidyl products are reduced from a few thousand ppm, an unacceptable level, to only a few ppm or to a non-detectable level by use of a multistage stripping column with or without inert gas purging without decomposition of the heat sensitive glycidyl products. Such glycidyl products are useful in epoxy resins particularly as crosslinking agents.

An improved process for the production of dialkoxy phosphoric acid esters of substituted hydroxypyrimidines which involves reacting a dialkyl phosphoric acid halide with a substituted hydroxypyrimidine at elevated temperatures and in the presence of an inert non-polar organic solvent and an acid binding agent but without catalyst, wherein the phosphoric acid halide and sodium or potassium hydroxide in molar excess of about 5 to 10% are added to a reaction mixture in reflux consisting essentially of the hydroxypyrimidine in molar excess of about 1 to 5% and the non-polar solvent at uniform rates over a period of 1 to 7 hours while removing water substantially as it is formed thereby impeding formation of cholinesterase inhibiting impurities. A preferred embodiment is the preparation of Diazinon.
