    Abstract: Technologies for providing secure emergency power control of a high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) system include a controller. The controller includes circuitry configured to receive status data indicative of a present physical status of a power system. The circuitry is also configured to obtain an emergency power control command triggered by a remote source. The emergency power control command is to be executed by an HVDC transmission system of the power system. Further, the circuitry is configured to determine, as a function of the status data, whether the emergency power control command is consistent with the present physical status of the power system and block, in response to a determination that the emergency power control command is not consistent with the present physical status of the power system, execution of the emergency power control command by the HVDC transmission system.

One exemplary embodiment is an interface device for coupling a power system device of a microgrid with a microgrid controller utilizing a data communication standard incompatible with the power system device, the interface device comprising three input ports configured to receive input from a power system device; a microgrid interface configured to provide output formatted according to any of a plurality of communication protocols, each being compatible with the data communication standard and configured to receive input defining microgrid configuration characteristics; data mapping logic structured to convert any of the input to output formatted according to any of the plurality of communication protocols; and parsing logic configured to parse the received input defining microgrid configuration characteristics effective to cause the data mapping logic to perform mapping of the received input to one of the plurality of communication protocols.

One exemplary embodiment is a microgrid comprising a plurality of switching devices, a plurality of distribution line segments, a plurality of measuring devices, each measuring device corresponding to one of the plurality of switching devices, and a network controller. The network controller is configured to: receive measurements from the plurality of measurement devices, determine a fault is occurring within the microgrid using the measurements, assign a topology classification to each of the plurality of distribution line segments, assign a proximity classification to each of the plurality of distribution line segments, determine fault location using the topology classification and the proximity classification, and isolate the fault by transmitting open commands to the two switching devices of the plurality of switching devices closest to the fault.

One exemplary embodiment is a nested microgrid system comprising a first microgrid including a network controller, a second microgrid, a third microgrid, a first restoration path selectively coupled between the second portion of the first microgrid and the second microgrid, and a second restoration path selectively coupled between the second portion of the first microgrid and the third microgrid. The network controller is configured isolate the first portion of the first microgrid from the second portion of the first microgrid, calculate weighting factors for the first and second restoration paths, select the first restoration path using the first weighting factor and the second weighting factor, and couple the second portion of the first microgrid to the second microgrid using the first restoration path.
