Abstract:
A METHOD OF COATING A STRIP OF VISCOUS MATERIAL ON A MOVABLE SUBSTRATE BY FEEDING THE MATERIAL THROUGH A NARROW GAP BETWEEN FEED MEANS AND A MOVABLE SUBSTRATE UNDER A STATIC PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THE INLET AND OUTLET OF THE GAP. THE GAP IS SEVERAL TIMES WIDER THAN THE WET FORMED LAYER AFTER FORMATION. IN THE INITIAL LAYER FORMING STEPS AND IN THE CONCLUDING LAYER FORMING STEPS THE HEIGHT OF THE GAP FROM THE SUBSTRATE IS REDUCED SO THAT IT IS SPACED ABOUT TWICE THE THCKNESS FROM THE SUBSTRATE. IN THE LAYER FORMING OPERATION BETWEEN THESE
INITIAL AND CLOSING STEPS THE GAP IS RAISED IN HEIGHT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE NORMAL STATIC PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL. A UNIFORM THICKNESS OF THE FORMED LAYER IS OBTAINED.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for improving and maintaining the viscosity of gelatino silver halide emulsions with a high solids content in a reservoir bath for tape coating a photographic emulsion on a support, wherein the coating emulsion is partly withdrawn from the bath and circulated through a falling film evaporator to which a vacuum is applied and processed to modify, control and improve the viscosity of the withdrawn emulsion. The viscosity of the viscous emulsion is controlled by passing the emulsion in a falling film through an evaporator with ballast steam injected under high velocity into the falling film in a parallel direction to produce a shearing force. The evaporator contains a reduced atmosphere through which the falling film passes. The steam is partially condensed in the emulsion and the emulsion is also heated through the walls of the evaporator with resultant evaporation. The temperature of the emulsion at the outlet is directly related to the temperature/vapor pressure curve of the reduced atmosphere in the evaporator and viscosity is attained which is maintained until the emulsion is applied to the web support.
Abstract:
A method of coating a strip of viscous solution on a movable substrate by feeding the coating solution through a narrow gap between coating apparatus which includes feed means and the movable substrate under a static pressure differential between the inlet and the outlet of the gap wherein the gap is part of a coating chamber of the coating apparatus. The gap is wider than the wet formed layer after formation. The coating chamber is connected to a vacuum means at the side of the coating from which the substrate is introduced. A negative pressure is effectuated at the inlet side of the coating apparatus. The vacuum means having a vacuum which seals the inlet end of the narrow gap in the coating apparatus by sucking air from the vacuum means through a diaphragm which withdrawal is at a uniform rate of flow.
Abstract:
A machine for coating a layer of a viscous emulsion on a movable support having a feed means operatively associated with the support with a narrow gap between the feed means and the support for forming the viscous emulsion into a layer on the movable support. The feed means contains a chamber opening into the narrow gap, and the machine is arranged so that the viscous emulsion fed from the chamber and formed by the narrow gap is under an adjustable static differential in pressure between the inlet end of the narrow gap which has a lower pressure on the emulsion and the outlet end of the gap which has a higher pressure. A cavity in a wall-adjoining the chamber in the feed means has one opening into the chamber sidewall and containing a compressible gas acts as an air cushion and reduces the variations in pressure on the feed material during feeding as the gas is enclosable within the cavity by the passage of feed material through the chamber.
Abstract:
In a wheel drier the temperature is continuously measured with a radiation pyrometer which is arranged in the rim of the drying wheel so that while the wheel rotates, the same surface element of the web always lies in the field of measurement of the pyrometer.
Abstract:
A process for coating a viscous solution by a wetting process on a movable substrate. The coating solution is formed by a narrow gap between coating apparatus and the movable substrate so that the narrow gap is part of a coating chamber of the coating apparatus. The coating chamber is connected to a vacuum means at the side of the coating apparatus from which the substrate is introduced.
