Abstract:
A process and apparatus for improving and maintaining the viscosity of gelatino silver halide emulsions with a high solids content in a reservoir bath for tape coating a photographic emulsion on a support, wherein the coating emulsion is partly withdrawn from the bath and circulated through a falling film evaporator to which a vacuum is applied and processed to modify, control and improve the viscosity of the withdrawn emulsion. The viscosity of the viscous emulsion is controlled by passing the emulsion in a falling film through an evaporator with ballast steam injected under high velocity into the falling film in a parallel direction to produce a shearing force. The evaporator contains a reduced atmosphere through which the falling film passes. The steam is partially condensed in the emulsion and the emulsion is also heated through the walls of the evaporator with resultant evaporation. The temperature of the emulsion at the outlet is directly related to the temperature/vapor pressure curve of the reduced atmosphere in the evaporator and viscosity is attained which is maintained until the emulsion is applied to the web support.
Abstract:
In a process for coating tapes or sheets with viscous solutions by the air-brush principle, a steam of air flows in the opposite direction to the movement of the web of material and acts substantially tangentially on the formation of the coating. This steam of air is produced by a vacuum between a bar which has an edge in the form of a ruler edge and the tape which is being coated, which moves past it at a close distance.
Abstract:
A PHOTOGRAPHIC WEB IS COATED WITH A PHOTOGRAPHIC EMULSION UNDER A ROLLER AND THE FINAL THICKNESS OF THE COATING IS EFFECTED BY AN AIR STREAM BLOWN TANGENTIALLY OVER THE COATING INTO A VACUUM CHAMBER. FLUCTUATIONS IN THE AIR STREAM ARE PREVENTED BY SUBJECTING THE AIR DISCHARGED FROM THE VACUUM CHAMBER TO A SUDDEN RESTRICTION IN ITS CROSS SECTIONAL AREA BY PASSING IT THROUGH AN APERTURED DIAPHRAGM. THIS ABRUPTLY CHANGES ITS PRESSURE IN THE RATIO OF AT LEAST 2:1 AND OBTAINS RELATIVELY HIGH AIR VELOCITY IN THE APERTURE IN THE SONIC REGION.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for improving and maintaining the concentration, and homogeneity of gelatino silver halide emulsions with a high solids content reservoir bath for tape coating a photographic emulsion, wherein the coating emulsion is partly withdrawn from the bath and circulated through a known type of falling film evaporator to which a vacuum is applied and processed to concentrate, degasify and homogenize the withdrawn emulsion. A ballast steam under high velocity is injected into the falling film of emulsion to act on the emulsion.
Abstract:
In an apparatus for coating foils or bands on one side with solutions of high viscosity as the foils or bands are passed through a gap, the surface of one wall of which is wetted with the solution of the gap is formed by a rotatably mounted support roller for the band which is to be coated and the other wall surface is formed by a cup which is adapted to the circumference of the roller and which is suspended via a weight loaded lever system in such a manner that it is three-dimensionally displaceable on it.
Abstract:
A PROCESS FOR COATING WEB SUPPORTS WITH VISCOUS SOLUTIONS IN WHICH THE SOLUTION IS APPLIED TO THE WEB SUPPORT FROM A COATING CHAMBER THROUGH A NARROW GAP BETWEEN THE EXIT SIDE OF THE CHAMBER AND THE SUPPORT, THE GAP OPENING BEING SEVERAL TIMES LARGER THAN THE THICKNESS OF THE APPLIED SOLUTION LAYER. AN ADJUSTABLE GAS PRESSURE IN EXCESS OF ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE IS APPLIED AGAINST THE COATING SOLUTIONS DIRECTLY ADJACENT THE OUTER SIDE OF THE COATING CHAMBER WHILE MAINTAINING ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE ON THE ENTRY SIDE OF THE COATING CHAMBER.
Abstract:
Fluid is uniformly distributed from spaced apertures along a distributing duct supplied by a perpendicular feed duct by inserting a perforated angular extension of the feed duct within and across the distributing duct with its central pointed edge in contact with the apertured wall of the distributing duct. A series of uniformly spaced short vanes are mounted parallel to the distributing duct on the outside of the angular extension, which is conveniently made of screen material and attached within the connected ducts by flanges.
Abstract:
An apparatus for coating foils, tapes with viscous solutions, comprising a guide member for the support to be coated, a wedgetype casting device as preliminary coating means and a striplike partition in the direction of movement of the support, forming a gap with a support extending over the width of the web. That partition now is serving as final coating means and is arranged between two chambers at different pressure, wherein the preliminary coating means is arranged just before partition. The housing of the preliminary coating means has a construction in the region of the flow slots extending over the width of the web. The flow slot is open in the vicinity of the overflow of the wedge-type casting device.
