Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for forming a sheet metal easy opening container wall in which an annular groove is formed around the periphery of a depressed central portion of a blank, a planar lip and an upstanding chuckwall are formed around the outer edge of the groove in the blank, the groove is reformed by moving portions of it radially outwardly to form a Z-wall connecting the center portion of the blank to the lip, a score line is formed in the lip to define a removable panel and the Zwall is collapsed to form an annular folded band adjacent the score line. The annular folded band is designed to shield the raw score edge on the central panel portion after separation of the panel from the can end.

An easy opening device is provided which includes a score line in the container wall defining an opening flap adjacent an edge of the container wall and a tab having a nose end overlying the opening flap and affixed thereto and a handle end toward the opposite edge of the container wall with a line of weakening in the tab between its nose and handle ends for depressing the handle end of the tab to a nonobstructing position on the container wall, and which further includes an upwardly embossed hook in the container wall for engagement over an edge portion of the handle end of the tab to restrain it in a non-obstructing position on the container wall. A method of forming an embossed hook for engaging a tab is also provided.

Apparatus for fabricating a tab element having an opening for joinder to a container wall including a female die having an elongated recess and an outwardly disposed annular tab engaging surface. A male die having an upwardly directed boss and a surrounding annular tab supporting surface. The male die having a concave transverse wall connecting the die boss with the annular tab supporting surface. Aligning the tab opening with the die elements and establishing relative closing movement between the dies produces compressive reforming of the opening defining portion of the tab element to provide a convexly curved portion corresponding in curvature to the male die concave transverse wall. A method of reforming an opening defining wall in a tab element to provide a continuous wall which diverges from the upper tab surface to the lower tab surface by compressively reforming the continuous wall. A container wall having a removable sector with a tab element secured thereto by means of an integral rivet including a wall panel having a hollow integral rivet provided with a transverse end wall and a peripheral wall. A tab element having an attachment opening defined by a continuous wall and the rivet extending through the tab element with the continuous opening defining wall in contact with the peripheral rivet wall. The opening defining wall having a lower inwardly convexly curved portion in surface to surface contact with a portion of the peripheral rivet wall having an outwardly concave configuration.
