    Abstract: A device for testing the effect of forming forces on the surface of or on a coating applied to a formable material, the device including two spaced-apart means for clamping the material, and a radius corner means located in a fixed position between the two clamping means in substantial alignment therewith. On each side of the corner means is disposed a structure providing cam surfaces located in a fixed radial relationship to the corner means. At least one of the clamping means is provided with cam following means disposed to engage the cam surfaces. When the movable clamping means is moved along the extent of the cam surfaces, with a test piece of the formable material tightly clamped between the clamping means, the test piece is bent and elongated in the manner encountered in a forming operation in which the material undergoes a substantial amount of stretching while being subjected to a substantial bend.

    Abstract: A FORMING DIE HAVING A BASE MMBER AND AN ELONGATED FORMING MEMBER SECURED TO THE BASE MEMBER, THE FORMING MEMBER HAVING AN INNER SURFACE, AN OUTER SURFACE AND A CONNECTING SHEET CONTACTING SURFACE. THE FORMING MEMBER DEFINES AN ELONGATED RECESS DISPOSED GENERALLY AT THE INTERSECTION OF THE INNER SUFACE AND THE SHEET CONTACTING SURFACE. A CYLINDRICAL ROLLER WHICH IS ROTATABLY SUPPORTED IS DISPOSED WITHIN THE RECESS. IN ONE FORM THE DIE IS PARTICULARLY SUITED TO BENDING DECORATED SHEET WITHOUT CREATING SURFACE DAMAGE. IT HAS TWO SPACED PARALLEL FORMING MEMBERS SECURED TO THE BASE MEMBER IN CHANNEL DEFINING POSITION. THE FORMING DIE MAY HAVE THE ROLLERS IN CONTACT WITH THE FORMING MEMBER WITHIN THE GENERALLY CYLINDRICAL RECESS OR MAY HAVE UNITARY OR SEGMENTED SPACER MEANS INTERPOSED BETWEEN THE ROLLERS AND THE FORMING MEMBER. THE SPACER MEANS HAS A CONCAVE SURFACE OF SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME RADIUS OF CURVATURE AS THE ROLLER, IN CONTACT WITH THE ROLLER.

    Abstract: Conjoint flanging, ironing and pinch-trimming fabrication of integral collars from metal sheet material, e.g. relatively thin work hardened aluminum alloy sheet material, having an aperture overlying a female die assembly of a coaxially arranged flanging and ironing die section and pinch-trim die section, said pinchtrim die section being disposed in predetermined spaced relation with said flanging and ironing die section and having a transverse shoulder contiguously connecting said die sections at the juncture therebetween, the axial position of the shoulder defining the height of the collar to be fabricated, by moving a selectively shaped male plunger having an enlarged sheet engaging portion through said sheet aperture and into operative relation with said female die sections to gradually and incrementally flange and iron the portions of said sheet material disposed about said aperture therein to form an extending collar of reduced wall thickness, and to sequentially force the deformed sheet material at said juncture against said shoulder to pinchtrim excess portions of the flanged and ironed sheet material to provide such reduced wall thickness collar with a uniform height and a well-defined collar edge.
