摘要： This sheet delivery apparatus for use with an intaglio printing press takes sheets from a conventional conveyor running at press speed, and on which the sheets are widely spaced as determined by the press operation, and passes them along a decelerating conveyor to a continuously running strip on which they are deposited in closely spaced relation. The strip and sheets together are then wound into a roll and allowed to stand for a period of time long enough to allow the ink to dry on the sheets. The decelerating conveyor includes perforated conveyor belt means running over a manifold which is connected to a vacuum pump. The pressure difference between the atmosphere and the evacuated manifold holds the sheets lightly on the perforated belt, thereby decelerating the sheets to the speed of the perforated belt, which is running slower than the press speed. At the end of the deceleration belt, the sheets pass on to a moving strip of paraffin coated paper which is being driven at a predetermined ratio with respect to the press speed by means of a continuous belt drive which runs along with the strip for a substantial distance. The tension on this strip is controlled by driving the strip take-up reel with a motor having a limited maximum torque characteristic, driving the strip between the reels at a preselected speed, and braking the strip supply reel with a limited maximum torque brake. The sheets pass from the decelerating belt onto a reach of the strip which is inclined slightly downward and extends to a reel on a double reel stand. The take-up reel position is controlled by the position of the strip so as to maintain that reach of the strip within a small angle of the horizontal throughout the winding process.

摘要： The plate wiping mechanism includes a wiping roll running in the opposite direction to and having its surface in rubbing contact with the printing plate of the intaglio press. The wiping roll is journaled in the sides of a tank containing an ink solvent, so that the periphery of the wiping roll moves from its position of contact with the plate through a bath of ink solvent, and then moves again to engage the plate. The wiping roll is driven from the main drive of the press through a control system by which the rotational speed of the wiping roll may be set as an adjustable proportion of the speed of the printing plate. The wiping roll is also arranged for endwise reciprocation with respect to the intaglio plate. The motor for driving the wiping roll in its endwise reciprocation is also controlled at a speed adjustably proportional to the speed of the intaglio plate. The wiping roll is fixed on a shaft whose opposite ends are individually adjustable by means of eccentrics to vary the pressure between the wiping roll and the intaglio plate. These eccentrics are rotatably mounted in the walls of the solvent tank. The joints in which the wiping roll shaft turns are constructed to accommodate rotation, endwise reciprocation, and eccentric adjustment of the shaft position. Furthermore, the driving connections by which the shaft is rotated and by which it is reciprocated are constructed to accommodate withdrawal of the solvent tank and the wiping roll as a unit from its operating position where the roll contacts the plate to a retracted position where the roll is separated from the plate.

摘要： Apparatus for supplying sheets to be printed to the impression cylinder of an intaglio press, including a first sheet feeding cylinder for transferring sheets to the impression cylinder. The first sheet feeding cylinder is fixed on a shaft journaled on the ends of a pair of links, which are pivoted at their other ends for rotation about a fixed axis. A second sheet feeding cylinder and a gear are fixed on a shaft which rotates about that axis. The links are rotatably mounted on that shaft, which is driven in synchronism with the plate cylinder of the press. A gear fixed on that shaft meshes with another gear fixed on the shaft of the first sheet feeding cylinder. The links may be driven by a motor and appropriate gearing to swing the first sheet feeding cylinder between a printing position where it is in rolling contact with the impression cylinder and a retracted position where it is spaced from the impression cylinder far enough to allow access to the impression cylinder and the plate cylinder. Latches may be provided for holding the paper feed cylinder in either its printing position or its retracted position.

摘要： The printing press shown has a printing station which discharges printed sheets above the head of the press operator. An overhead conveyor having spaced grippers picks up sheets discharged at the printing station and carries them to a sheet delivery station, where the grippers engage a gripper release mechanism and the sheets are dropped. The return reach of the conveyor, also above the operator''s head, passes an inspection station between the sheet delivery station and the printing station. The gripper release mechanism at the delivery station is retractable to allow a selected sheet to pass the delivery station. At the inspection station, a fixed gripper release is provided which releases all the grippers on the passing conveyor. The inspection station includes a tray located under the conveyor to receive any sheet dropped there. The tray is pivoted along one edge and is movable between a sheet receiving position close to the conveyor, and an inspection position below the conveyor, where the operator may inspect the printed sheet. The tray may be movable by a motor controlled by a photoelectric cell on the tray so that the tray is lowered to the inspection position when a sheet is deposited there and the tray remains in its sheet receiving position when there is no sheet on the tray. An ink supply carriage cooperates with the printing station and is movable away from the printing station under the conveyor to a retracted position so that the ink supply roller trains become accessible. In the retracted position, the ink supply carriage is below the tray at the inspection station. Interlocking means is provided so that the tray cannot drop to its inspection position when the ink carriage is retracted.
