An apparatus for the removal of proof sheets from a sheet-processing machine has at least one sheet catcher provided with a gripper device. The gripper draws the sheet out of the stacking region. A lower sheet catcher is first moved into the stacking region above the sheet stack. Following a deposition of at least one proof sheet, the sheet is gripped with the gripper device, and following sheets are held back with an upper sheet catcher. Then the proof sheet is drawn out of the stacking region by moving the lower sheet catcher and the gripper device back.

A delivery for a machine processing flat printing materials includes a suction belt conveyer having conveying runs forming a support surface. To remove rejects or proof sheets as required, the delivery transports the materials along a transport path over a stack that is otherwise built up and transfers the sheets to the support surface. The physical position of the support surface can be varied while maintaining its generatrix. Therefore, the support surface can be adjusted in each print job to a working position in which secured transfer of removed printing materials to the suction belt conveyer is ensured. In a particular configuration, a latching device is provided that permits the conveying runs to escape from their working position in the event of a jam. Preferably, the latching device has a latching pin and a latching recess.

The sampling apparatus comprises a divider mechanism which includes a divider blade and which is pivoted by a fluid actuated cylinder to and away from a working position, in which position the divider blade is disposed in the printed sheet path to cause several consecutive ones of the printed sheet sets to travel on one of its sides, where the path is open to a sample exit, and the succeeding printed sheet sets to travel on its other side. Immediately following the movement of the divider mechanism to the working position, an extractor mechanism comprising a pair of extractor blades is pivoted by another cylinder past the printed sheet path for delivering out of the sample exit at least the last of the several consecutive printed sheet sets travelling on the said one side of the divider blade.

A sheet delivery mechanism of the type in which printed sheets are deposited by an endless conveyor upon a pile, the front of which is defined by vertical guide members. When it is desired to remove a sheet from the top of the pile for control purposes a supporting finger is interposed above the pile at the forward edge for temporarily intercepting the subsequent sheets, and the guide members are retracted so that the control sheet may be removed. It is the primary feature of the invention that provision is made for time delay, for example, by using a lost motion connection, to insure that the guide members are not retracted until the finger is fully interposed and to insure that the finger is not withdrawn until the guide members are fully restored to working position so that there will be hiatus during which a sheet might travel beyond the pile. In one embodiment, a mechanical linkage is interposed between the manual operator and the finger, whereas in another the finger is moved by a power actuator energized by a manually operated control device. To further insure that the supporting finger is fully inserted upon arrival of a sheet, the manual control is interlocked with a triggering device on the sheet conveyor, so that it is the conveyor which performs the ultimate triggering of the mechanism. In addition to defining the front edge of the pile, the guide members are oscillated back and forth through a small angle thus jogging the edge of the pile but with the jogging movement being automatically terminated when the guide members are retracted. In one of the embodiments of the invention interposable fingers are provided at both the leading and trailing edges for temporary support of the subsequently fed sheets to permit removal of the entire pile and substitution of a new platform upon which the intercepted sheets are deposited to begin a new pile.

The printing press shown has a printing station which discharges printed sheets above the head of the press operator. An overhead conveyor having spaced grippers picks up sheets discharged at the printing station and carries them to a sheet delivery station, where the grippers engage a gripper release mechanism and the sheets are dropped. The return reach of the conveyor, also above the operator''s head, passes an inspection station between the sheet delivery station and the printing station. The gripper release mechanism at the delivery station is retractable to allow a selected sheet to pass the delivery station. At the inspection station, a fixed gripper release is provided which releases all the grippers on the passing conveyor. The inspection station includes a tray located under the conveyor to receive any sheet dropped there. The tray is pivoted along one edge and is movable between a sheet receiving position close to the conveyor, and an inspection position below the conveyor, where the operator may inspect the printed sheet. The tray may be movable by a motor controlled by a photoelectric cell on the tray so that the tray is lowered to the inspection position when a sheet is deposited there and the tray remains in its sheet receiving position when there is no sheet on the tray. An ink supply carriage cooperates with the printing station and is movable away from the printing station under the conveyor to a retracted position so that the ink supply roller trains become accessible. In the retracted position, the ink supply carriage is below the tray at the inspection station. Interlocking means is provided so that the tray cannot drop to its inspection position when the ink carriage is retracted.
