Abstract: 1,219,487. Liquid filtering; ion-exchange; liquid-solid contact. AMERICAN STANDARD Inc. 16 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 49157/68. Headings B1D, B1F and B1J. Liquid introduced by pump 16 is treated by upward flow from inlet 18, through zone 22 of a bed of granular material 12, to outlet 24 from which a portion of treated liquid is recycled by pump 36 to above the upper surface 42 of the bed, whence it flows down through zone 44, creating downward pressure which stabilises zone 22, and periodically pump 16 is shut off, valve 70 closed: and pump 36 builds up pressure within the bed to force some of the bed material down through normally closed valve 20. In Fig. 2 this discharge of material is aided by vacuum created in chamber 72 by pump 74, valve 26 being closed. Or valve 26 could remain open, in which case the vacuum effects the discharge largely by itself. Subsequently, either before or after restoring normal flow of liquid, valve 54 is opened to allow additional bed material; 'under liquid 56 to enter the containment vessel 10. The discharge may be initiated by a pressure switch 57 and thereafter controlled by timer 58, if bed 12 is a filter bed, and valve 54 is controlled to restore the bed to a predetermined level by sensor 68. Or bed discharge and replacement may be controlled wholly by a timer, by a treated liquid analyser or by a liquid meter after a given amount of liquid has passed. The apparatus may soften, treat or filter water by passage through a bed of ion exchange resins, sand or active carbon, or may purify sewage or food processing waste by passage through granular or powdered coal. As shown, the liquid effluent from zone 44 passes through outlet 24, but another outlet, above 24, could be provided.

Abstract: 1,219,489. Liquid-solid contact; ion exchange; filtering. AMERICAN STANDARD Inc. 16 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 49159/ 68. Headings B1D, B1F and B1J. Liquid is pumped from inlet 18 upwards through a bed 12 of granular solids to outlet 22, whence it flows to conduit 30 through tank 28, and periodically the flow is suspended by switching off pump 16 and closing valves 38 and 24, then valve 36 is opened and pump 46 is started, which delivers treated liquid from tank 28, or alternatively water, to supply vessel 40 which contains fresh bed material, and once pressure in vessels 10, 40 has built up lower valve 20 is opened to discharge spent bed material. Before restoring normal conditions, valve 34 may be opened draining some liquid off, which compacts the bed round inlet 18. Discharge may be assisted by valve 20 opening into a chamber 64 under vacuum, as in Figure 2, not shown. The various operations are controlled by a timer T 2 , whose operation is initiated by a timer T 1 or by a pressure switch PS connected in inlet line 14. Vessels 10, 40 may be made of metal or plastics. The process may involve softening or filtering water by passage through a bed of ion exchange resins or sand, purifying sewage by filtration and absorption in a bed of granular coal, purifying sugar solution in a bed of active carbon, or extracting oil from soybeans using solvent.
