THIS DISCLOSURE INVOLVES ESTERS OF HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE AND HYDROXYPROPYL STARCH, SPECIFICALLY THE ACETATE AND LAURATE. THESE CELLULOWE ESTERS ARE USEFUL AS GELLING AGENTS FOR ORGANIC SOLVENTS. THE HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE ACETATE IS PREPARED AT LOW COST UNDER MILD CONDITIONS AND IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL IN GELLING METHYLENE CHLORIDE (USEFUL IN PAINT STRIPPING) AND METHYL AND ETHYLENE BROMIDE (USEFUL AS SOIL FUMIGANTS). THE HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE AURATE IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL AS A GELLING AGENT FOR JET FUEL.
Abstract:
This disclosure concerns a cellulose fatty acid ester sponge which picks up oil and non-polar solvents. The sponge has a bulk density of 0.02g/cm3 to 0.06g/cm3 and the degree of substitution of the cellulose is 1.2 to 2.9. The sponge is made by reacting a cellulose sponge with fatty acid derivatives, specifically lauroyl chloride, under controlled conditions. The esterified sponge has a bulk density of 0.5 to 3g/cm3.

THE PREFERED INGREDIENT IS CELLULOSE ACETATE. THE ADDITIVE IS NON-TOXIC, BIO-DEGRADABLE, WATER INSOLUBLE, AND IS NOT DEGRADED BY THE ACIDS IN PETROLEIUM FUELS. THE ADDITIVE IS SPRINKLED ON THE SURFACE OF THE OIL COATED WATER AND AFTER ABSORBING MANY TIMES ITS WEIGHT IN OIL IS EASILY REMOVED.
