    Abstract: Curtain coaters are utilized to provide a curtain of coating material through which an object to be coated passes. The coater head cavity herein is provided with means to restrict the flow of material from the curtain coater and thereby prevent the flooding of a slow moving article which is meant to be coated with a controlled, relatively thin layer of material. The means restricting the flow may be an open-celled material or a group of nested spheres.

    Abstract: Screen printing apparatus and method for printing a design on a porous substrate by applying ink through a screen by means of a rotatable cylindrical squeegee which is provided with an improved peripheral porous resilient compressible cover made of reticulated open cell foam and in which the squeegee is rotated under compressive force in contact with the surface of the screen in the presence of a supply of ink so as to compress the peripheral layer against the surface of the screen to thereby increase the area of contact between the squeegee and the screen and to at least partially compress the pores in the area of contact whereby the peripheral porous cover envelops a portion of the ink so that a portion of the ink is first absorbed and as it enters the area of compressed contact with the screen it is then expelled from the open pores to thereby force the ink under pressure through the openings in the screen and into the substrate throughout the area of contact between the screen and the squeegee.

    Abstract: A process for producing a resinous composition surface covering having a multi-level decorative surface by depositing a layer of granular resinous dryblend on a backing sheet, heating the granules to form a porous cohesive layer therefrom, cooling the layer and applying settable resinous inks thereto to form a design thereon, gelling the ink, removing non-design carrying portions of the porous layer, and heating to fuse all of the remaining resinous material. Additional surface alterations of the multi-level surface, such as texturing, may be accomplished by chemical or mechanical means. After-finish coatings may be applied to enhance the appearance and utility of the surface covering.

    Abstract: A primary backing is needle punched with fiber strands to form a tufted carpet. The short loops of the strands which the tufting needle formed on the primary backing are treated with a solvent which softens the outer surface of the fibers. A secondary backing is then applied over the primary backing, and a sandwichlike structure is formed with the primary backing and secondary backing having therebetween the short fiber loops which have been softened by the solvent. After the solvent has been vaporized, the two backings are adhered to each other and the fiber loops. Adherence is due primarily to the fact that the fiber loops had been softened by the solvent and turned into an adhesive which, upon drying, serves to bond the elements together.
