Abstract: In drawing wire of compound material with a core of aluminum and a casing of copper, in order to join two wire ends for continuous drawing, the copper close to the end of the wires is removed, and the adjacent portion is tapered downwardly. The two ends are then butt-pressure welded and the burr is cut off. The exposed area of aluminum at the burr and the adjacent parts of the wire are then provided by sputtering with a metallic material of good malleability and good electrical conductivity such as silver or gold.

Abstract: In isostatic hot pressing of powder in a collapsible container, the powder is enclosed in a container which is provided with one or more evacuation openings, and a conical support is held in position adjacent the evacuation openings. A funnel-shaped body of sheet metal is secured above the support and the evacuation openings by welding its edge to the wall of the container. The body is evacuated through a suction tube connected to the funnel and the tube is sealed. Thereafter the container is subjected to heat and pressure, and the funnel-shaped member collapses into engagement with the conical support.

Abstract: A control system for an electrically heated furnace for sintering powder bodies, especially bodies of hard metal, has a vacuum pump connected to the interior of the furnace chamber by a suction conduit. The furnace includes a plurality of heating elements for different zones, a temperature sensitive instrument for each zone and a controlled measuring instrument for one of the zones which is the master zone. These instruments are connected to a master regulator for the furnace and slave regulators for the individual zones. A throttle valve in the vacuum conduit, or a controlled tap connected to the vacuum conduit, make it possible to keep the pressure in the furnace constant despite the fact that the pump runs at a constant speed. A pressure-sensing member connected to the vacuum conduit is also connected to the regulators for the heating elements.
