Embodiments of an access point (AP), user station (STA), and method for spatial modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SM-OFDM) communication in a wireless network are generally described herein. The AP may transmit an SM-OFDM signal that comprises multiple OFDM signals. The SM-OFDM signal may be transmitted in channel resources that comprise multiple sub-carriers and the OFDM signals may be based at least partly on data symbols for used data portions of the sub-carriers. The used data portions may be based on a first portion of encoded bits and the data symbols for the used data portions may be based on a second portion of the encoded bits. In some examples, the used data portions of the sub-carriers may be different for at least some of the OFDM signals.

The AP may encode a block of input bits according to a parity check matrix to produce a low density parity check (LDPC) codeword. The parity check matrix may be included in a group of candidate parity check matrixes that includes a base parity check matrix and an expanded parity check matrix. An LDPC codeword length may be smaller for the base parity check matrix than for the expanded parity check matrix. The base parity check matrix may be used for the encoding when the LDPC codeword is transmitted for a legacy user station (STA). The expanded parity check matrix may be used when the LDPC codeword is transmitted for a non-legacy STA.

A transmitter for spatial modulation in a high-efficiency wireless local-area network is disclosed. An apparatus is disclosed that comprises memory and circuitry coupled to the memory. The processing circuitry configured to split a data bitstream between an antenna bitstream and a symbol bitstream, encode the data bitstream into a plurality of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols from a signal constellation, encode the antenna bitstream into a plurality of antenna indices from a space constellation, map symbols of the plurality of symbols to a plurality of subcarriers of a channel and associate the symbols with an index of the plurality of indices. The processing circuitry may be configured to configure the access point for transmission of the symbols on the channel in accordance with an associated one of the antenna indices.
