摘要： A liquid crystal display element has a liquid crystal cell contructed such that a liquid crystal layer composed of a liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy is homogeneously oriented between a pair of substrates provided with electrodes; a pair of polarizers disposed such that the liquid crystal layer is arranged between the polarizers; and a uniaxial medium disposed at least one of clearances between the liquid crystal layer and the both polarizers, the uniaxial medium having a positive optical anisotropy and an optical axis in a direction perpendicular to a substrate face. In the liquid crystal display element, products of refractive index anisotropy and thickness of the uniaxial medium are different from each other in accordance with the difference between displayed colors determined every display picture element.

摘要： An insulating layer is formed on a plurality of electrodes formed on a plastic film substrate, the insulating layer having a plurality of electrode connecting holes formed therein. Electrodes of the plurality of electrodes are selectively connected to an external circuit via respective ones of the plurality of connecting holes. Conductive color filter layers are formed on the thus-connected electrodes by an electrochemical method. A value obtained as a result of subtracting a width of each one of the plurality of electrode connecting holes from a width of a respective one of the plurality of electrodes is large so that a position of the electrode connecting hole is maintained to correspond to a position of the electrode even when the plastic film substrate expands or contracts maximally.

摘要： A reflection type liquid crystal display (LCD) made up of polymer dispersion type display elements each having a liquid crystal dispersion film in which liquid crystals are dispersed in a tridimensional microstructure implemented by a polymer or similar resin. Selective light reflecting or diffusing means introduces forwardly scattered light components from scattering pixels again into a liquid crystal layer without effecting non-scattering pixels. Hence, high reflection intensity and, therefore, high contrast is achieved. A light source unit is positioned such that at least a part of illumination light is reflected in the reflection angle range of the selective reflecting means. Hence, forward scattering with high scattered light intensity can be used, insuring extremely light white display.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device, comprising:(a) a liquid crystal layer disposed between a pair of light permeable substrates, an alignment of a liquid crystal of said liquid crystal layer being substantially horizontal relative to said substrates in the absence of applied voltage, said liquid crystal layer having a twisted structure with a twist angle along a direction of a thickness thereof such that an adequate display is provided without substantially reducing the time dimensional driving;(b) a pair of polarization means disposed on both outsides of said liquid crystal layer; and(c) at least one birefringent medium layer disposed between one side of said liquid crystal layer and the polarization means on said one side of said liquid crystal layer; an optical axis of said birefringent medium layer being inclined toward a polarization axis of the adjacent polarization means, the alignment direction of said liquid crystal on a surface of another side of said liquid crystal layer making an angle from 0.degree. to 25.degree. relative to the polarization transmission axis or an absorption axis of the polarization means, the direction of a maximum refractive index of said birefringent medium layer and the alignment direction of said liquid crystal on a surface of said one side of said liquid crystal layer on a surface of said one side of said liquid crystal layer making an angle from 20.degree. to 130.degree. while a retardation of said birefringent medium layer is in a range of 0.125 .pi.rad to 1 .pi.rad and a retardation of said liquid crystal layer is about 3/2 .pi.rad or about 2 .pi.rad.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device is disclosed, comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal layer which has an intrinsic helical pitch of approximately twice as large as a thickness of the liquid crystal layer and also has a bistable character capable of switching by an application of voltage, and further provided with at least one birefringent medium layer between a polarizer and a substrate. This construction of the liquid crystal display device results in a reduction of birefringent effects, whereby achieving a high contrast, satisfactory color purity, and other display characteristics such as a higher duty ratio operation and faster time response, suitable for displaying a large volume of information data.
