A pressure monitoring system for a combustion engine includes, but is not limited to of combustion chambers and pressure sensors associated to at least some of the combustion chambers. A multiplexer has inputs connected to at least a first one and a second one of the pressure sensors. A non-zero phase shift exists between the operating cycles of first and second ones of the combustion chambers associated to the first and second pressure sensors. A controller controls the multiplexer to output data from the first pressure sensor while the first combustion chamber is in a predetermined portion of its operating cycle and pressure data from the second pressure sensor while the second combustion chamber is in the predetermined portion of its operating cycle.

At each engine cycle, nearby the TDCC, an injector is driven so as to perform a fuel injection sequence according to a predetermined pattern (A-Z), including a plurality of successive, separate fuel injection pulses (pulse 1-pulse N) having respective predetermined durations. The start of the first injection pulse (Pulse 1) of the sequence is defined as a predetermined angular distance from the TDCC. For each injection pulse (pulse 2-pulse N) following the first one (pulse 1) the respective start is selectively determined either as a time distance from the end of the immediately preceding injection pulse (pulse 1-pulse N−1) or as an angular distance from the relevant TDCC, in dependence on the instantaneous value of at least one predetermined parameter.

At least one of the methods includes, but is not limited to establishing a relationship between said rail pressure and a leak rate of the injector, estimating a fuel drain rate from said rail based on a fuel injection rate, the rail pressure and said rail pressure/leak rate relationship, estimating a desired intake flow rate of said pump based on said fuel drain rate, and controlling the pump to operate at said desired intake flow rate.

A method for controlling the titre of the air-fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine provided with at least two cylinders, in which the exhaust gas present in a common exhaust manifold is analyzed in order to measure at least two successive values of the overall air-fuel ratio of the cylinders; a value of the air-fuel ratio of a final combusted cylinder being estimated by carrying out a linear composition of the two successive values of the overall air-fuel ratio of the cylinders and the value of the air-fuel ratio of the final combusted cylinder being attributed to a first of the cylinders and being used to correct a titer of the air-fuel mixture introduced into the first cylinder.
