A method and apparatus are disclosed for dynamically determining a bus address that uniquely identifies a hardware component on a common bus. In an illustrative cell station implementation, each cell station includes a hardware controller that communicates on a common bus with a plurality of hardware components. The address space is logically divided into two ranges, namely, a first range of addresses referred to as the common access addresses, and a second range of addresses referred to as the assigned addresses. One address is reserved for the primary node that is responsible for assigning addresses, such as the hardware controller. Thus, each hardware component communicates with the hardware controller on one of the common access addresses to request a channel, and thereafter communicates on an assigned address, once assigned by the hardware controller. Collisions between multiple hardware components on the common access channels are minimized by assigning multiple channels.

The present invention is an apparatus and a method for sharing a communication channel among two or more base stations connected to a base station controller via a common transmission line in a channelized format. The present invention allows each of the base stations to receive data transmitted over a shared communication channel from the base station controller, to determine whether the data transmitted from the base station controller is intended for that base station, and to insert its data into the communication channel without interfering with data transmitted by other base stations over the communication channel. In one embodiment, each of the base stations is configured to bridge onto the transmission facility such that signaling messages being transmitted over a signaling channel may be received by all of the base stations. The signaling messages has associated identifiers for specifying particular base stations to which the signaling messages are intended. In another embodiment, each of the base stations can insert its signaling message into the data stream over the signaling channel without interfering with signaling messages already in the data stream.

The interface and method involves transmitting transmit or receive data over a first set of time slots and transmitting various uplink or downlink low rate static/control signals over a second set of time slots. The transmit data includes in-phase transmit data bits and quadrature phase transmit bits, and the receive data includes in-phase transmit data bits and quadrature phase transmit bits received over a diversity antenna system.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for automatically determining system configuration information, including the sector, carrier frequency and bus assignment of each hardware component installed on equipment, such as a cell station. In an illustrative cell station implementation, each cell station includes a hardware controller that communicates on a common bus with a plurality of hardware components. When each cell station is powered up or reset, each hardware component reads an identification value (or a portion thereof) that has some physical significance from a backplane on which the hardware component is installed. The identification information obtained from the backplane is used to derive a bus address that uniquely identifies each hardware component on the common bus. In addition, the identification information contains information that describes the hardware component and how the component is located within the cell station. In the illustrative embodiment, the identification value identifies the carrier frequency, frame, sector number (such as &agr;, &bgr;, &ggr;), unit type and unit number associated with the hardware component. The hardware component can provide information to the hardware controller that allows the hardware controller to generate a map of the hardware components located within the cell and determine their interconnection.
