    Abstract: A varible rate spring for use in a combustion engine has a lower spring rate at high valve lifts than at low valve lifts to reduce contact stresses in the valve train assembly (24) at maximum valve lift. In one embodiment, the varible rate spring includes a cantilevered spring (70) having a free end (80) for engagement with a valve (12), a fixed end secured to a cylinder head (18) and an intermediate portion (88) which engages a pair of stops (90/92). As the valve moves between the seated position to an intermediate lift position only that portion of the spring (70), from its free end (80) to the intermediate portion (88) engaging the stops (90/92) is active. At the intermediate lift position the spring (70) disengages the stops (90/92) and the entire length of the spring (70) becomes active thereby decreasing the spring rate. In another embodiment two coil springs (94/96) are connected in series having a separator (110), which acts as a spring damper, disposed therebetween. The separator (110) engages a spring retainer (98) to preload the lower spring. Only the upper spring (96) is active as the valve (12) moves between the seated and intermediate lift position, the preload on the lower spring (96) being overcome at the intermediate lift position so that both springs (94/96) are active as the valve (12) moves to the maximum lift position.

    Abstract: In a friction type transmission two substantially rigid members are in frictional engagement at respective contact portions to provide a longitudinally extending contact zone therebetween. In some such transmissions the relative velocities of the members at a first end of the contact zone are different than at a second end thereof. This creates slippage problems.     Abstract: An improved rotary mechanism including a housing having a chamber with a wall of a predetermined geometric shape including at least one lobe, the lobe being defined by a continuous curve, a shaft journalled in the housing and having an eccentric within the chamber, a rotor journalled on the eccentric for rotation and translation within the chamber, the rotor having plural apexes, each being provided with an apex seal receiving groove, the wall of the housing deviating from the predetermined geometric shape by being spaced outwardly from the envelope of the predetermined geometric shape and by being generally spaced inwardly from the envelope of a closed geometric figure spaced outwardly of and parallel to the predetermined geometric shape. The closed geometric shape has sharp transition points at the lobes and the wall at the lobes is defined by a continuous curve substantially encompassing the sharp transition points and extending to both sides thereof. Apex seals are disposed within the grooves and have arcuate crowns sealingly engaging the wall. The crowns are relieved on both sides of the midpoints thereof from the theoretical shape required to ensure good sealing engagement with a wall configured in the form of the closed geometric figure with minimal movement within the grooves. Thus, the seals can be wider than in conventional rotary mechanisms and provide a greater area of contact with the wall to decrease the wear rate.

    Abstract: An improved slant axis rotary mechanism including a housing defining an operating chamber, a shaft journalled in the housing having an angularly offset portion within the chamber and a rotor within the chamber and journalled on the angularly offset portion. The rotor has an annular flange provided with plural apices on each side thereof. Peripheral seals are carried about the periphery of the flange and sealingly engage the housing.     Abstract: Prior art roller followers have generally been relatively expensive to produce and provisions have had to be made to deliver pressurized lubricant to bushings which have been used as bearings for the roller. Such roller followers have also been made with partially open apertures for bearings, thus eliminating the need for pressurized lubrication, but in such roller followers there is a tendency for the rollers to fall out of the open apertures. These probelms are solved herein by forming the body (16) and bearing surfaces (26,28) of a roller follower (10) in two parts, an inner structure (20) which supports the bearing surfaces (26,28) and an outer structure (18) which surrounds the inner structure (20) and fastens the entire assembly (10) together. The principal use of such a roller follower (10) is in engines wherein the roller (12 ) contacts a camshaft and an end (44) of the roller follower removed from the roller (12) motivates a push rod against the force of a spring, thus causing the rod to reciprocate.
