A container made of thermoplastic material such as PET includes a bottom portion, a neck portion, and an intermediate body portion including at least two circumferential rows of panels for providing controlled volumetric reduction of the container. A land separates each adjacent pair of panels in each row. The rows of panels are staggered with respect to each other such that the lands of one row are vertically aligned with the panels of any adjacent row. The design distributes circumferentially the vertical and horizontal support for any label applied to the label panel of the container while still providing the desired panel movement in response to the existence of a partial vacuum within the container due to hot filling.

A blow-molded bottle of thermoplastic resin has a hollow body with a generally cylindrical side wall rotationally symmetric about a longitudinal axis of the bottle and an integral base merging with the side wall. The base is defined by an outer surface having a plurality of arcuately extending downward projections separated from each other by hemispherical segments extending from the cylindrical side wall to the longitudinal axis of the bottle. Each of the arcuately extending downward projections has a first inclined portion contiguous to the longitudinal axis, a second inclined portion situated radially outside of, and axially displaced downwardly from, the first inclined portion, a generally perpendicular ring segment having an upper edge united with the first inclined portion by a curved portion having a radius of between about 0.015 in. and 0.060 in., and a lower edge united with the second inclined portion. A radially outwardly and upwardly curved portion defining the axially lower most extent of each downward projection has an inner edge united with the second inclined portion. An inclined outer wall portion having an upper edge united with the cylindrical side wall has a lower edge united with the radially outwardly and upwardly curved portion. Slanted radial facets merge the sides of the arcuately extending downward projections with the hemispherical segments extending from the cylindrical side wall to the longitudinal axis of the bottle.

An injection blow molding (IBM) system and method for forming a plurality of parisons and molded articles. The IBM system includes an injection station having two die sets, two body mold halves, and two neck mold halves. Each of the neck mold halves is attached directly to one of the die sets. The neck mold halves are configured to cooperatively form the exterior shape of the necks of one or more parisons. This type of neck mold attachment configuration can allow for better temperature control of the neck portion of the parison being molded therein. Further, such a neck mold configuration can reduce the cost of fabricating, installing, and/or replacing the neck molds.

An injection blow molding (IBM) system and method for controlling the surface temperature of the parison molds by passing heat transfer fluid through a plurality of fluidly-coupled heat transfer channels. The heat transfer channels can be formed primarily in die sets to which the parison molds are attached. The placement and distribution of the heat transfer channels relative to the parison-forming surfaces helps control the temperatures of the bodies and necks of the parisons being formed, instead of relying on various adjustments by an IBM operator. This system/method reduces the discretion required by the IBM operator and shifts the burden of consistently making high-quality parisons and molded articles onto the designer of the IBM tooling.
