Abstract: An opportunistic storage service, or system, identifies currently unused storage capacity on a plurality of physical storage components of computing devices dispersed throughout a provider network. In some embodiments, the currently unused storage capacity is provisioned as primary storage, but is not currently being used to store primary storage data. The opportunistic storage service advertises at least a portion of the currently unused storage capacity as opportunistic storage capacity and provisions the opportunistic storage capacity subject to revocation if additional storage capacity of the physical storage components is needed to store primary storage data to fulfill a primary storage commitment.

Abstract: A solid state storage card includes flash storage devices for storing user data and a serial peripheral interface (SPI) flash storage storing a first set of machine instructions. The solid state card also includes a plurality of processor cores coupled to the flash storage devices and SPI flash storage device. Each processor includes storage for storage of a second set of machine instructions configured to cause one of the processor cores to respond to access requests for the flash storage devices. Upon power-up, no storage in the solid state card contains any of the second set of machine instructions. When executed by one of the processor cores, the first set of machine instructions causes the processor core to initiate a download of the second set of instructions from a device external to the solid state card.

Abstract: A system includes a host controller and a solid state storage card coupled to the host controller. The solid state storage card comprises an interface to the host controller, processor core, volatile memory, and non-volatile memory. Upon receipt of a core dump triggering event, the processor core copies execution state data from a register of the processor core to a buffer in the volatile memory and writes core dump data of the buffer to the non-volatile memory. The host controller reads the core dump data from the solid state storage card's non-volatile memory through the interface.
