Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for designing and manufacturing conformal cooling molds with lattice structures include, in one aspect, a method including: obtaining temperature and pressure data for a 3D model of a conformal cooling mold from computer simulation of injection molding; replacing a volume of the 3D model with a lattice structure to reduce the mass of the mold; adjusting a number of lattice unit cells for the lattice structure in accordance with the temperature data to increase heat conduction from hotter areas of the mold; adjusting thickness(es) of beams forming the lattice structure in accordance with the pressure data to prevent structural failure of the mold; and providing an updated version of the 3D model of the conformal cooling mold that incorporates the lattice structure after adjustment of the number of lattice unit cells and the thickness(es) of beams forming the lattice structure.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including medium-encoded computer program products, for computer aided design of physical structures using generative design processes, where three dimensional (3D) models of the physical structures are produced to include lattices and hollows, include: obtaining design criteria for an object; iteratively modifying 3D topology and shape(s) for the object using a generative design process that represents the 3D topology as one or more boundaries between solid(s) and void(s), in combination with physical simulation(s) with a hollow structure and a lattice representation; adjusting a thickness of the hollow structure; adjusting lattice thickness or density; and providing a 3D model of the generative design for the object for use in manufacturing a physical structure corresponding to the object using one or more computer-controlled manufacturing systems. The providing can include generating instructions for manufacturing machine(s), which can employ various manufacturing systems and techniques, including additive, subtractive and casting manufacturing methods.

Abstract: An extensively reconfigurable seat design can include a vehicle seat system including: a vehicle seat defining a vehicle occupant accommodating space, the vehicle seat including a seat cushion portion including multiple individually adjustable bladders, where each of the multiple individually adjustable bladders has a connected valve that controls fluid communication with an internal space of the individually adjustable bladder to adjust a pressure level within the internal space of the individually adjustable bladder, and an associated sensor configured to detect the pressure level within the internal space of the individually adjustable bladder. A computer can actively sense and control the pressure levels within the bladders, using the sensors and valves, to provide customization, adaptive, ride-active and intelligent control over a reconfigurable cushion for a vehicle.
