Abstract:
The invention relates to a tampon (10), to the essentially cylindrical circumferential surface of which a liquid-permeable, thermoplastic material is fastened, with the application of pressure and heat. The dome-like constriction (10b) at the introduction end (10a) and the withdrawal end (10c) of the tampon (10) remain free of the liquid-permeable, thermoplastic material. The fastening of the liquid-permeable material to the outer surface of the absorbent material of the tampon (10), which consists of a nonwoven ribbon section rolled up on itself and pressed radially to give the final form of the tampon (10), guarantees that the high absorbency of the nonwoven fibre material, based on capillary action, continues through the liquid-permeable, thermoplastic material onto its outside. In addition, the liquid-permeable material offers protection against fibres becoming detached and makes it easier to introduce the tampon into and remove it from the body cavity.

A tampon pack, in particular for female hygiene, as indicated, which consists of a tampon applicator (1) having an applicator shell (2) and a plunger (3) telescopically mounted therein to be axially movable, and of a tampon (4) which is located in the applicator shell (2), has a withdrawal cord (5) and can be pushed out of the applicator shell (2) by means of the plunger (3), a flexible packaging film (6) being provided in the region of the introduction end (7) of the tampon (4) and being held on the applicator shell (2). The special point of the tampon pack is that the packaging film (6) surrounds substantially the entire surface of the tampon (4), is made to be substantially impermeable to water vapor and is provided, on the inside facing the tampon (4), with a coating having a high coefficient of sliding friction. An increase in the volume of the tampon, caused by moisture absorption during the storage period, is thereby prevented and/or alleviated on all sides, and it is ensured that the tampon (4) can easily be pushed out of the applicator shell (2). Moreover, packaging material is saved by this type of wrapping the tampon (4). (FIG. 1).

A tampon having a relatively high density, compressed core (16) and a plurality of lower density longitudinal ribs (17) is disclosed. The longitudinal ribs (17) have a softer fiber structure and a coarser capillary structure and extend radially from the core (16). The longitudinal ribs (17) are separated one from another by outwardly open longitudinal grooves (18). A process for preparing the tampon and an apparatus useful in the process are also disclosed.

Between a pre-shaping device and a pressing device for tampons there is interposed a delivery device. The longer parallel legs of the L-shaped pressing jaws are set at a distance which corresponds to the diameter of the tampon. The shorter legs of the pressing jaws are oriented towards the longer leg of the other pressing jaw. The width of the pressing jaws corresponds at least to the length of the tampon and of the withdrawal cord. The delivery device is arranged for reciprocating movement transversely of the pressing jaws and has a transmitting channel which corresponds to the opened pressing device as well as a receiving channel which corresponds to the closed pressing device. Also interposed along with the delivery device, and in alignment with the transmitting channel, there is a transmitting device, and there is also a transmitting device in alignment with the receiving channel and the ejecting channel. Behind the pressing device there is a cylindrical ejecting device which is movable in the closed pressing device for ejecting the tampon from the pressing device through the ejecting channel.

A process for forming a tampon having a relatively high density, compressed core and a plurality of lower density longitudinal ribs is disclosed. The longitudinal ribs have a softer fiber structure and a coarser capillary structure and extend radially from the core. The process includes forming a fibrous tampon blank, radially pressing a circumferential surface of the blank over spaced apart longitudinally extending portions to form spaced apart ribs, exposing the longitudinal ribs to a radially applied second pressure to form a tampon having a relatively high density, compressed core and a plurality of lower density longitudinal ribs extending therefrom. The longitudinal ribs are separated one from another by outwardly open longitudinal grooves, at least where they extend from the core, and they form a soft, essentially smoothly cylindrical outer surface of the tampon.

The invention relates to a tampon applicator having a cylindrical outer sleeve and an inner sleeve, which is displaceable therein, is provided with an axial longitudinal slit and encloses a tampon. A tongue-shaped retention element is integrally connected to the outer sleeve so as to be bendable and projects through the longitudinal slit of the inner sleeve into the latter, and lies against the rear end of the tampon. When the inner sleeve is withdrawn out of the outer sleeve, the tampon is held in place by the retention element and transferred into the outer sleeve. The retention element is provided with one part of a locking mechanism (detent plate), the other part of which is formed by one of the two sleeves (longitudinal edges of the longitudinal slit of the inner sleeve. The aforesaid locking parts interact in such a way that the retention element is locked in its engaged position bent into the inner sleeve. The transfer of the tampon out of the inner sleeve into the outer sleeve is thereby ensured when the tampon applicator is utilized, and at the same time a simple, economic mass production of the tampon regulator is ensured.

A catamenial tampon is provided in the form of absorbent material enveloped by a liquid permeable cover which is then folded and compressed into a cylindrical shape. The enveloped absorbent material is in the form of a flat cushion and is first folded into front, central and rear sections with the front and rear sections overlying the central section. A withdrawal cord is looped around the first folded cushion which is then folded around the withdrawal cord and compressed into the final tampon shape. The resulting tampon expands when wet into a cup-shaped configuration.
