    Abstract: A tool equalizes a packer or bridge plug before it can release the slips and sealing element of the packer or bridge plug with a reconfigurable grip tool. In one configuration the grip tool is latched only into the equalizing mechanism for the packer or bridge plug. Having equalized the pressure and while still latched to the equalization mechanism the tool is reconfigured with a force and locked into a second configuration. From that position the grip tool can latch and move the release mechanism for total release and retrieval to the surface. Release force undermines a ratchet lock for the slips to allow extension as the sealing element extends axially and radially retracts. If the slips fail to release with undermining of the ratchet lock then a set down force can be applied to re-engage the lower slip cone to push it from the lower slips for a release.

    Abstract: A tool equalizes a packer or bridge plug before it can release the slips and sealing element of the packer or bridge plug with a reconfigurable grip tool.     Abstract: The power charge of a wireline pressure setting assembly includes a barrier located adjacent an open upper end of the power charge. The barrier centralizes the power charge in horizontal applications to ensure the associated tool properly sets. The barrier also limits how much of the power charge can flow out of its housing in a horizontal application. The barrier can be porous or impervious to contain as much of the power charge in a small sub-chamber in the pressure chamber defined by the barrier. Once ignition starts in the power charge the barrier can be consumed or otherwise disabled for the normal functioning of the setting device to set a tool and release from the set tool in a normal manner.

    Abstract: A subterranean tool that has a pressurized chamber when brought out of the hole after being actuated is depressurized by a tool that facilitates location of a technician at a distance when the gas is allowed to escape. Preferably, the tool features a hydraulic system with a device to build pressure at the technician end and a suitably long hydraulic line to the subterranean tool to connect to the venting tool that is independently secured to the subterranean tool to be depressurized. Raising the hydraulic pressure in the system extends a piston in the venting tool against a rupture disc to cause the disc to fail and the pressurized gas to escape. The vent tool is secured against longitudinal or relative rotational movement with respect to the subterranean tool. Variations including pneumatic or electrically or magnetically driven pistons, among other variants are also contemplated.
