    Abstract: An absorptive dryer for a compressed air brake system having a desiccant material for removing moisture from air in the brake system. A filter is disposed upstream from the desiccant material to prevent contamination of the desiccant, and a coalescer is disposed upstream from the filter to coalesce any oil mist particles in the brake system to at least a sufficiently large size to be readily removed from the air by the filter. In order to minimize contamination of the filter, the coalescer and filter elements are positioned in the embodiments illustrated herein so that many of the coalesced oil droplets are removed by gravity from the air flow and do not reach the filter element.

    Abstract: An inflatable safety cushion device for protecting vehicle passengers that includes a filter-muffler for removing any potentially harmful particles from air flowing into an inflating bag, and for reducing the noise level of the inflating air flow. The filter-muffler comprises a first cylindrical filter element encircling a second cylindrical filter element. A perforated, hexagonal, metallic tube is disposed between the two cylindrical filter elements. The sides of this hexagonal tube cooperate with the inner surface of the outer cylindrical filter element to define six open spaces or chambers. The velocity of air flowing through perforations in the hexagonal element is reduced as the air enters an open chamber. This velocity reduction reduces the noise level of the air flow. The hexagonal element is elastically deflected by a high velocity pulse of air passing through the filter-muffler. This deflection absorbs energy and further reduces the noise level of the air flow.

    Abstract: A filter arrangement for a method of molten polymer processing is disclosed in which a plurality of filter elements are disposed in a filter cavity, with each element including filter surfaces aligned with the general direction of flow through the filter cavity, to thereby increase the effective filter surface area, and each element also including restrictive flow paths internally of the filter surface to maintain a relatively large pressure drop across the filter required for proper polymer processing in which conditioning of the molten polymer occurs to create long link molecules. The method of manufacture includes the steps of assembling a sandwich of outer layers of a filtering mesh and inner layers of a coarser mesh, diffusion bonding the layers together, sealing the edges, cutting the resulting sandwich in half by an electrodischarge, electron beam, laser machining, or other suitable process, pressing the open edge of each half into a respective opening in a manifold plate, and bonding each half thereto. In a preferred version of the process, the sealing step is performed by compressing the edges under a degree of pressure necessary to create cold flow of the metal, sufficient to seal and bond the periphery thereof.
