    Abstract: An automatic slack adjuster for a cam-operated brake is disclosed. The adjustment mechanism includes a pair of torquelimiting clutch springs. One spring limits adjustment to a predetermined torque level so that large actuating forces generated during a brake application will not overload the adjustment mechanism. The other clutch spring insures that the adjuster will not ''''back off'''' after an adjustment is effected. The adjuster is designed so that manual adjustment may also be effected, either to adjust the brakes or to back the brakes off without disconnecting any part of the automatic adjuster mechanism.

    Abstract: A fluid pressure braking system for the trailer portion of an articulated vehicle includes an emergency valve which controls communication between the trailer supply line, the trailer service line, the reservoirs carried on the trailer, the spring brake actuators, and the service brake actuators. During normal operating conditions, the valve communicates fluid pressure from the trailer supply line to the reservoirs and to the spring brake actuators to provide hold-off pressure maintaining the spring brake actuators in a released condition, and permits actuation of the service brake by the air pressure communicated through the trailer service line in the normal manner. However, during emergency conditions, or when the vehicle is parked, the fluid pressure level in the supply line is dropped to a relatively low level. When this occurs, the trailer emergency valve prevents communication between the reservoir and the spring brakes and communicates the hold-off pressure in the spring brakes to effect a service brake actuation using this hold-off pressure. Consequently, an emergency or parking actuation is initially effected by actuation of the service brake. This hold-off pressure is allowed to bleed through a relatively low level at a predetermined rate, thereby permitting the spring brake actuators to gradually apply so that the spring brake actuators are used only for parking.
