Abstract: Debris, which is collected from a lawn, for example, is compressed prior to being supplied to a bag by rotatably mounted compactor blades rotating between stripper bars, which substantially strip the debris from the blades. The debris may be picked up by rotatably mounted wires, which pass between stripper bars, so that the debris is substantially removed from the wires by the stripper bars prior to the debris being directed to the compactor blades.

Abstract: Lawn and parking lot sweepers of the rotary brush type in which sweepings are discharged into bags are known. However, in such sweepers the debris generally is not compressed sufficiently prior to entering the bag. As a result, bags must be changed too frequently. The apparatus herein is provided with a single compression roller having mechanically actuated retractable fins for force filling a compression chamber. Debris from the compression chamber outlet is forced into the bag. Conveying means transport debris from a cylindrical brush or mower outlet to the compression roller.

Abstract: A rotatable compression roller or drum is disposed within a housing for compressing debris, which may be collected from a lawn, for example. The roller or drum is formed of a plurality of sections having a circular configuration and a hollow center. Each section has a plurality of arcuate segments spaced from each other to form openings therebetween to receive blades, which are equally angularly spaced from each other at each section, movable beyond and retracted within the periphery of the roller or drum during rotation of the roller or drum with the maximum blade extension occurring 180* from the maximum blade retraction. The arcuate segments of each section are offset with respect to the arcuate segments of adjacent sections by an amount equal to one half of the angle between adjacent blades cooperating with the openings of each section. The positions of maximum extension and maximum retraction of the blades are adjustable to insure that maximum retraction occurs prior to the rotation of the blade from a compression chamber in the housing and to compensate for wear of the blades. A unique method of assembling the compression roller or drum is employed.

Abstract: Debris is picked up by equally angularly spaced brushes. Each brush is arranged in a helix for cooperation with a plurality of stripper bars. The helix causes the brush to engage the end of only one of the stripper bars at a time during rotation to reduce the shock load on the stripper. Each brush can have a row of tines adjacent thereto with the rows of tines being equally angularly spaced.
