A receptacle connector and a plug connector for connecting a coaxial cable of 75 ohms or greater to a printed circuit board without affecting the outside configuration of their shells. At one end, the receptacle connector forms a spring contact receiver portion for resiliently retaining the plug end of the plug connector. The plug connector terminates a coaxial cable at its other end. The receiver portion of the receptacle connector is right-angled to a three-legged terminal section for solder connection at the printed circuit board. The receptacle and plug connectors comprise an outer shell member, a dielectric member, and a center conductor. The shell members are stamped and formed to maintain an exact constant inside diameter to the shells. The center conductors are stamped and formed to maintain an exact but variable outside diameter which is used to change the terminating impedance of the respective connector. The center conductors are subsequently insert molded into the dielectric members during their formation. The molded dielectric members are preferably of an insulative and low dielectric constant material, such as Teflon. The connectors are assembled by forming the outer shells around the dielectric members which have locating means for determining a positive relationship between the shells and dielectric members.

Various configurations of straight and right-angle receptacle connectors and plug connectors for connecting a coaxial cable of 75 ohms or greater to a printed circuit board or coaxial cable are disclosed. The receptacle and plug connectors comprise an outer shell member, a dielectric member, and a center conductor. The outer shell members are stamped and formed to maintain a predetermined inside diameter. The center conductors are preferably stamped and formed to maintain an exact but selectable outside diameter determined by the desired characteristic impedance of the connector. The center conductors are subsequently insert molded into the dielectric members during the manufacturing process. The connectors are assembled by inserting the molded dielectric member subassembly into the outer shell.

A high contact force, high elastic response range pin-receiving electrical contact is provided in a pin-receiving contact including a base portion and a pair of spaced apart cantilever beams which extend forwardly from the base to a pin-receiving end. A pair of inwardly directed contact surfaces are defined on each cantilever beam facing the opposed beam for slideably, electrically engaging an inserted pin terminal. In accordance with the invention, a resilient beam support member extends from and interconnects the pin-receiving ends of the cantilevered beams. The resilient beam support member provides a significantly improvement in the elastic response range of the pin-receiving contact by enabling each cantilevered beam to endure a greater outward displacement before a minimum yield in the beam occurs while providing a greater normal force against the pin. In a preferred embodiment, the resilient beam support member is a planar U-shaped spring which extends parallel to and adjacent the cantilevered beams and extends rearwardly from the front pin-receiving end of the contact.

An electrical connector for electrically connecting a modular circuit package such as a large scale integrated circuit package having a plurality of conductive interfaces with a printed circuit board. The connector includes a plurality of generally U-shaped resilient stressable terminals each having a bight-portion and two free ends defining a package contacting end which is adapted to engage one of the interfaces and a circuit contacting end which is adapted to engage one of the points of the printed circuit board. The terminals are mounted in an insulated housing. The housing includes a base member having a plurality of terminal receiving recesses for receiving and positioning the bight portion of each terminal against the side thereof. The housing also includes two generally U-cross section cover members, each of which is adapted to snap-fit over each side of the base member. In this manner, the terminals mounted in the recesses are trapped between the cover and the base member.

A connector assembly generally comprises a unitary terminal including a relatively rigid portion having a wire trap means for receiving a conductive part of the first wire and a wire piercing side with a first insulation cutting edge formed thereon. The terminal also includes a resilient portion spaced from the wire piercing side having a second insulation cutting edge thereon facing the first cutting edge. The space between the first and second cutting edges defines an insulation displacement slot for receiving the second wire. The cutting edges are spaced a distance not less than the diameter of the conductive part of the first wire. The assembly also comprises a housing with an opening through which the terminal is receivable. The housing generally includes a first compartment for receiving the rigid portion of the terminal and the first wire. The housing also includes a second compartment spaced from the first compartment for receiving the resilient portion of the terminal. A wire loading slot is defined between the first and second compartments for receiving the second wire prior to engagement with the terminal. The compartments have means allowing communication with the loading slot. The second compartment has a cam surface formed thereon for engagement with the resilient portion for moving the second cutting edge toward the first cutting edge as the terminal is inserted into the housing. In this manner the cutting edge displaces the insulation of the second wire at the loading slot and engages the conductive part thereof.
