A description is given of a method for the analysis and/or monitoring of the partial discharge behavior of an electrical operating means, in particular in terms of its development over time. Here, appropriate partial discharge data is recorded in process state matrices (2, 3), in which, in each case in a matrix element (5) of the process state matrix (1), the amplitude (7) of a partial discharge, its phase angle (6) and its frequency of occurrence is depicted (in particular what is known as a PRPD representation). A simplified analysis is made possible by the fact that, at a first time, a partial discharge process state is registered in a first process state matrix (2) and, at a later time, a further partial discharge process state is registered in a further process state matrix (3). Then, for the purpose of analysis and/or monitoring, the first (2) and the second (3) process state matrix are compared with the aid of comparison and scaling methods.

A line locating device and method that is capable of determining the location of a line even when a significant amount of transmitted signal is coupled to neighboring lines. A device according to this invention includes a transmitter that couples a transmitted signal onto a metal line where the transmitted signal is a first signal having a carrier frequency modulated with second signal of a lower frequency. The device also includes a receiver that receives a received signal from the metal line and evaluates the signal in terms of period and polarity to determine an incoming signal or an outgoing signal. The receiver addresses an appropriate signaling unit in response to the incoming signal or the outgoing signal.

In a method for detecting partial conductor short circuits (7) in a conductor (11) including plural mutually insulated partial conductors (5) in which the partial conductors (5) are connected together at one or both ends of the conductor (11) by a short circuit (3), a simple measurement without changes to the conductor is made possible in that the propagation behavior of time-varying electrical signals is measured on the conductor (11), that the measured propagation behavior is compared with the propagation behavior on a reference conductor without partial conductor short circuits, and that conclusions are drawn as to the presence of partial conductor short circuits from the changes in propagation behavior given by the comparison.
