    摘要: The present invention discloses an optical drive and a method for preprocessing a disc readout signal rk of an optical drive on the basis of a set of low-pass filters. The cutoff frequency fC of the filters wk, more particularly, can be set within the optical bandwidth, which improves the Viterbi detection performance in the case of high speed drive operations. Three types of filters are described, in which a Type I shaping filter performs best given a limited hardware cost for the bit detector. Compared to other more advanced noise-whitening techniques, it is only speed dependent and requires little prior knowledge of the channel and noise, thus cheap and easy to design. The invention can be applied in connection with optical disc drives, in particular when high frequency noises are dominant, for example, in the case of high speed operations.

    摘要: A tracking error (TE) signal is formed from a single spot on a photodetector 25 to improve the robustness in optical disc applications having a reduced track-pitch. Reduced track pitches are employed in high data capacity optical disc formats. By using high frequency cross-correlation of a central aperture signal, the differences within the left 21 and right 23 detector halves yield a divergence from the zero crossing that produces a more pronounced tracking signal. The more pronounced tracking signal is insensitive to incoherent cross talk in multi-layer discs.

    摘要: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for robust tracking at narrow track-pitches on optical discs, enabling higher densities on Blu-ray Discs (5) as well as near-field discs. Increasing radial density results in loss of radial diffraction within the numerical aperture of the lens. Due to this loss in diffraction, current tracking methods, such as Push-Pull and Differential Phase Detection (DPD), will stop working. The invention provides a method and apparatus that relies on cross-correlating the central aperture (CA) signals of 3 optical spots (22, 24, 26) that are positioned such that there are a central spot (24) and spots (22, 26) positioned to the left (22) and right (26) of the central spot (4). By using CA signals, the tangential diffraction is used, which is hardly affected by a track-pitch reduction.

The optical system is adapted to direct the main beam (C) and the first (A) and second (B) auxiliary beam onto the carrier so that the main beam is positioned on a first track, and the first and second auxiliary beam are oppositely positioned on a second and a third track. The optical system can adjust a push pull (PP) radial error signal from the main beam by a function; ƒ=ƒ(A, B, C), where the function ƒ is dependent upon adjacently positioned readable effects in the first, second and third track i.e. the local optical environment of the main beam. Therefore a filtering or “cleaning” of the push pull signal is performed depending on the local optical environment of the main beam.

The medium (20) has a substrate (1a, 1b) and an L0 recording stack (2) and an L1 recording stack (3) both comprising a phase-change type L0 and L1 recording layer and the recording stacks are separated by a transparent spacer layer (4). The L0 recording stack (2) is present at a position closest to the entrance face (25) and has an optical transmission of TL0a and TL0c when the phase-change layer respectively is in the amorphous phase and in the crystalline phase. The medium (20) contains pre-recorded information modulated in at least one of: an embossed pregroove (21) in the substrate (1a, 1b), embossed pits in the substrate and recorded phase-change marks in at least one of the recording layers L0 and L1 (6, 11). The pre-recorded information contains a flag whether formatting of the L0 recording layer of the L0 recording stack (2) is needed depending on the transmission values TL0a and TL0c of the L0 recording stack (2). In this way it is achieved that the medium (20) has a good playability, recordability and random access behavior even when the L0 recording layer (2) has been partially recorded with information.

The radial tilt error signal may be proportional to a cross correlation signal between a Radial Push Pull (RPP) signal and a Central Aperture (CA) signal or a cross correlation signal between a Radial Push Pull (RPP) and a Diagonal Push Pull (DPP) signal.
