摘要:
A novel solid ink supply container adapted for use with solid ink printers, at least includes: removable housing adapted to receive solid ink masses, the housing adapted to be coupled to at least one printhead; a heater subsumed by the housing, the heater adapted to liquefy solid ink masses; an outlet port adapted to facilitate fluid ink transfer to at least one printhead; an ink sensor adapted to sense the amount of ink in the supply container; at least one electronic storage device attached to the housing, the electronic storage device adapted to exchange printer operation information with the printer to which the ink supply container is attached; and electrical contacts attached to the housing; the electrical contacts adapted to exchange power and information between the printer, and exchange power and information between the storage device and other components of the housing. The ink supply container is adapted to be recycled by returning a depleted container to a recycling operation and receiving a replenished container for installation in the printer.

A fluid level sensor measures a height of a fluid in a volume with a plurality of piezoelectric sensors arranged along at least one wall of a container. The sensors are positioned to enable activated sensors to interact with the materials adjacent the sensors to produce electrical signals in more than one of the sensors. These electrical signals are used to identify the fluid level in the volume.

A solid ink stick transport system has been developed that differentiates between ink sticks inserted into a single insertion port of an inkjet printer. The system includes a solid ink support platform that moves between a position exposed outside of a printer housing to receive solid ink sticks and a position within the housing. The support includes a sensor that enables a controller to identify the solid ink stick before transporting the solid ink stick to an appropriate feed channel.

A solid ink printer is configured to learn the identity of solid ink sticks for printer operation. The solid ink printer includes a feed channel having an insertion opening configured to receive solid ink sticks, a sensor positioned near the insertion opening of the feed channel and configured to obtain solid ink stick type data from a solid ink stick inserted into the insertion opening of the feed channel, and a controller communicatively coupled to the sensor to receive the solid ink stick type data, the controller being configured to store the solid ink stick type data in a memory in response to an initialization signal and to operate the solid ink printer with reference to the solid ink stick type data stored in the memory by the controller.

A solid ink delivery system for a phase change ink image generator includes a solid ink stick loader and a solid ink stick feeder that cooperate to provide solid ink sticks to an ink melter. The solid ink delivery system includes a solid ink stick loader having a moving support that transports a solid ink stick from a loading area and a solid ink stick feeder having a moving gripper for engaging a solid ink stick received from the solid ink stick moving support. The moving gripper remains in engagement with the solid ink stick as the ink stick is delivered to an ink melter and converted to liquid ink. The loader and gripper members of the delivery system interact with ink sticks that are configured with drive engagement structures at opposed sides of the ink stick.
