    摘要: An air bag module (10) includes an air bag (30) having a base portion (40) and a body portion (42) connected with the base portion. An elongate tether (60) for controlling inflation of the body portion (42) of the air bag (30) has an intermediate portion (90) sewn to one of the portions (40, 42) of the air bag and has first and second end portions (78, 88) sewn to the other of the portions of the air bag. A shorter portion (70) of the tether (60) extends in a first direction from the intermediate portion (90) of the tether and includes the first end portion (78) of the tether. A longer portion (80) of the tether (60) extends in a second direction from the intermediate portion (90) of the tether and includes the second end portion (88) of the tether. The air bag (30) has a partially inflated condition in which the shorter portion (70) of the tether (60) is extended and resists movement of the body portion (42) of the air bag away from the base portion (40). The shorter portion (70) of the tether (60) is rupturable under the force of the inflating air bag (30) to enable movement of the air bag from the partially inflated condition to a fully inflated condition. The shorter portion (70) of the tether (60) is preferably narrower than the longer portion (80) of the tether.

    摘要: A method of making air bags for vehicle air bag assemblies includes the step of forming a set of air bag panels. The set of panels includes a first panel with a perimetric edge and a second panel with a perimetric edge having an undulant fray-inhibiting contour. These panels are joined together to form a structure capable of being inflated to a predetermined three-dimensional configuration. Specifically, the perimetric edge of the first panel is joined to the perimetric edge of the second panel. Preferably, a plurality of second panels are die-cut with a die-board including a series of knives. Each knife has a shape corresponding to the desired shape of the second panel and the desired undulant fray-inhibiting contour of the panel's perimetric edge. The present invention also provides an air bag for a vehicle air bag assembly which includes a set of panels joined together to form a structure capable of being inflated into a three-dimensional shape. The set of air bag panels includes a first panel with a perimetric edge and a second panel with a perimetric edge having an undulant fray-inhibiting contour.

    摘要: An air bag (30) has a base portion (40) and has a body portion (42) connected with the base portion and inflatable in a direction away from the base portion into an inflated condition. The air bag (30) includes first and second tethers (60, 70) which are sewn between the base portion (40) of the air bag and the body portion (42) of the air bag. The first tether (60) has a predetermined weakened portion (100 or 102). The second tether (70) has substantially higher elongation than the first tether (60). The second tether (70) has an effective length which is at least about the same as the effective length of the first tether (60). The air bag (30) has a partially inflated condition in which the first tether (60) is extended to its effective length and resist movements of the body portion (42) of the air bag away from the base portion (40). The first tether (60) is rupturable at the predetermined weakened portion (100 or 102) under the force of the inflating air bag (30) to enable movement of the air bag from the partially inflated condition to a fully inflated condition. The second tether (70) stretches during movement of the air bag (30) from the partially inflated condition to the fully inflated condition.

    摘要: An inflatable vehicle air bag is formed of flexible material. A fluid inlet opening is defined by a base portion of the flexible material which circumscribes a central axis. A plurality of deflectable flaps and a plurality of mounting holes are formed in the flexible material. The mounting holes are located radially outward from the deflectable flaps. Segments of reinforcement and resistant materials overlie the gas inlet opening and are secured to the flexible air bag material by concentric seams which surround the central axis. The segments of reinforcement and heat resistant materials have mounting holes located between the concentric seams and aligned with the mounting holes in the air bag material. Moreover, the segments of reinforcement and heat resistant materials form deflectable portions which overlie the deflectable flaps of the flexible air bag material. The air bag is adapted to be secured to a structural part of an occupant restraint system by fasteners (e.g., bolts, rivets) which extend through the mounting holes. The configuration of the fluid inlet opening, the location of the mounting holes, and the reinforcement and heat resistant materials combine to redirect fluid from the inflator into the air bag and to resist tearing of the air bag away from the occupant restraint system under the heat and pressures which are applied to the air bag during its deployment.
