Abstract:
DISCLOSED HEREIN ARE SEVERAL PROCESSES FOR PURIFYING TEREPHTHALIC ACID (TPA). THE PRIMARY INVENTIVE CONCEPT DISCLOSED HEREIN EXISTS IN THE USE OF A MINOR AMOUNT OF WATER TO SUPPRESS COLOR FORMATION. A SUBSTANTIALLY HOMEGENEOUS ADMIXTURE OF TPA, A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER, AND PREFERABLY AN AGENT, E.G. ACETIC ACID, TO PROMOTE DESTRUCTION OF 4-CARBOXYBENZALDEHYDE (CBA) IS HEATED TO THE MELTING POINT OF THE ADMIXTURE FOR A TIME SUFFICIENT TO REDUCE THE CONCENTRATION OF CBA TO THE DESIRED LEVEL.
Abstract:
A process for the purification of terephthalic acid (TPA) by heating the TPA and a liquid medium in the presence of a Group IB, II-B or VIII catalyst to above 325*C followed by cooling of the heated mixture so as to crystallize the purified terephthalic acid. The heating above 325*C is preferably to a temperature such that no TPA remains as a solid.

A PROCESS FOR THE PURICICATION OF CRUDE TEREPHTHALIC ACID (TPA) BY HEATING THE CRUDE TPA AND A LIQUID MEDIUM IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IODINE OR BROMINE CATALYST OT AN ELEVATED TEMPERTURE FOLLOWED BY COOLING OF THE HEATING MIXTURE SO AS TO CRYSTLLIZE THE TPA. THE HEATING REQUIRE IS TO A TEMPERATURE ABOVE ABOUT 275*C. A ND SHOULD PREFERABLY BE TO A TEMPERATURE SUCH THAT NO TPA REMAINS AS A SOLID.
