摘要: 558,955. Resinous polymerization products. ROBERTS, R. P., and JONES, K. June 27, 1942, No. 8862. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXIII] Cellulosic materials such as wood, paper, or fabric of cellulose or regenerated cellulose are bonded together by applying to the surfaces to be united a composition containing polyvinyl alcohol, an aldehyde, and a substance capable of catalyzing the acetalization of the alcohol by the aldehyde, bringing the surfaces together, and effecting the acetalization. The catalyst may be active only when heated, in which case the composition may be kept in the cold for some days before use, or may be active at ordinary temperatures. Heat-activable catalysts specified are hexamethylene tetramine, ammonium chloride or sulphate, compounds liberating sulphur dioxide when heated, e.g. sulphites and bisulphites of sodium and potassium, bisulphite compounds of aldehydes and ketones, and reaction products of sulphur dioxide with aldehydes and ketones. Catalysts active at ordinary temperatures are sulphur dioxide, hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic, or chloracetic acid, sodium or potassium bisulphate or acid phosphate, chlorides, sulphates, formates, acetates and chloracetates of iron, aluminium, zinc, tin, and titanium. The polyvinyl alcohol may be made by complete or incomplete saponification of polyvinyl formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, butyraldehyde, acrolein, or furfural. The composition may be a solution in water and/or a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol or ethanol.
