Abstract: The electrical power output of a nuclear powered generating station, as requested by an operator or by an automatic dispatch system for the grid with which the station is associated, is controlled in a manner which insures that the nuclear steam supply system limits are not violated. The invention permits the nuclear powered generating unit to operate at maximum permissible power for the existing nuclear steam supply system conditions by exercising control over the unit turbine in such a manner that the rate of load change will be controlled as a function of the proximity of the actual load to the desired load and the rate of load increase will be algebraically limited by the proximity of the nuclear steam supply system conditions to the steam supply system operating limits. Additionally the turbine load will automatically be reduced when necessary at a rate which equals or exceeds a value which is commensurate with the magnitude of any violation of the steam supply system operating limits.

Abstract: A thermal margin protection system for a nuclear reactor wherein the coolant low flow trip point and the calculated thermal margin trip point are switched simultaneously and the thermal limit locus is made more restrictive as the allowable flow rate is decreased. The invention is characterized by calculation of the thermal limit locus in response to applied signals which accurately represent reactor cold leg temperature and core power; cold leg temperature being corrected for stratification before being utilized and reactor power signals commensurate with power as a function of measured neutron flux and thermal energy added to the coolant being auctioneered to select the more conservative measure of power. The invention further comprises the compensation of the selected core power signal for the effects of core radial peaking factor under maximum coolant flow conditions.

Abstract: In a nuclear reactor system, at least two independent measures of reactor core power are provided with one being dependent on neutron flux and the other on coolant thermal parameters. The two independent measures of core power are interrelated in a manner which exploits the advantages of each while avoiding inherent limitations of either to provide a more accurate determination of core power for a variety of system conditions.
