Abstract: A light source unit generates an optical signal out of a bend-insensitive (“BI”) optical fiber that is compliant with a desired encircled flux (“EF”). The unit includes a light source to generate an optical light signal and a conventional multimode optical fiber coupled to receive the optical light signal from the light source at a first end. A modal conditioner is arranged to condition the optical light signal propagating along different modes of the conventional multimode fiber. A first bend-insensitive (BI) multimode optical fiber has an input end, the input end of the first BI multimode optical fiber being coupled at a second end of the conventional multimode optical fiber to receive the conditioned optical light signal from the conventional multimode fiber. The output from the first BI multimode optical fiber outputs an optical signal having the desired EF.

Abstract: A fiber optic cable and connector assembly is disclosed. In one aspect, the assembly includes a cable optical fiber, an optical fiber stub and a beam expanding fiber segment optically coupled between the cable optical fiber and the optical fiber stub. The optical fiber stub has a constant mode field diameter along its length and has a larger mode field diameter than the cable optical fiber. In another aspect, a fiber optic cable and connector assembly includes a fiber optic connector mounted at the end of a fiber optic cable. The fiber optic connector includes a ferrule assembly including an expanded beam fiber segment supported within the ferrule. The expanded beam fiber segment can be constructed such that the expanded beam fiber segment is polished first and then cleaved to an exact pitch length. The expanded beam fiber segment can be fusion spliced to a single mode optical fiber at a splice location behind the ferrule.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic component including a ferrule having a distal end and a proximal end. The ferrule defines a fiber passage extending though the ferrule along a fiber passage axis in a proximal-to-distal orientation. The fiber optic component also includes an optical fiber structure affixed within the fiber passage. The optical fiber structure includes a beam expansion section optically coupled to a sacrificial section. The beam expansion section has a construction adapted to expand an optical beam from a first beam diameter to an enlarged second beam diameter. The sacrificial section is configured to receive the optical beam having the second beam diameter from the beam expansion section. The sacrificial section is positioned at the distal end of the ferrule and has a polished end face at the distal end of the ferrule. The sacrificial section has a core-less construction or has a core with a core diameter that is larger than the enlarged second beam diameter.
