Abstract: A system and method for vibratory cutting, including in the manufacture of ceramic honeycomb bodies. The apparatus includes a transducer configured to generate vibrations with respect to an axial direction. A cutting element is configured to receive and oscillate axially in response to the vibrations. The cutting element has a blade having a width, an axial length, and a thickness. A cutting plane of the blade is defined with respect to the width and the axial length. The blade has opposing side surfaces that extend parallel to the cutting plane. The thickness extends perpendicular to the cutting plane between the opposing side surfaces. A set of fluid bearings are configured to exert fluid pressure on each of the opposing side surfaces to constrain vibrations of the blade oriented in directions transverse to the cutting plane.

Abstract: An optical fiber alignment system is disclosed. The alignment system includes a reflective mirror, an image capturing system, and a data processing system. The reflective mirror is configured to simultaneously reflect a first illuminated image of a first optical fiber and a second illuminated image of a second optical fiber. The image capturing system is configured to receive the reflected first and second illuminated images and to convert the first and second illuminated images into computer-readable image data. The data processing system is configured to receive the image data from the image capturing system and to control movement of at least one of the first optical fiber and the second optical fiber based upon the image data.

Abstract: Centering apparatuses and methods for precision placement of a product or component, such as a ceramic honeycomb body, prior to a post-production processing steps are provided. In particular, after extrusion of a component or ware, the component or ware oftentimes requires one or more post-production processing steps in order to obtain a final product. The centering apparatuses and methods described herein provide for the precise and accurate centering of the product (or component) prior to performing these post-production processing steps, thereby obtaining repeatable, consistent, high-quality final products.

Abstract: A fluid-operated gripping apparatus for holding a workpiece having a curved sidewall in a working orientation, and associated methods for gripping and holding a workpiece, are provided. Three fluid-operated actuators, each including an actuator rod and a moveable piston arranged within a cylinder, are equally spaced around a perimeter of a workpiece and receive fluid from a single pressurized fluid source. A fluid (e.g., hydraulic or pneumatic) circuit causes the actuators to extend during a closing stroke of the gripping apparatus according to the force equalization principle. Each actuator includes an end effector pivotally coupled with an actuator rod and configured to contact a surface of the workpiece at exactly two points. A backstop configured to contact an end face of the workpiece is coupled with a rotational joint.

Abstract: Systems and methods for cutting through one or more extrudates to form one or more honeycomb bodies are provided. The systems described herein provide a low inertia vibratory cutting system configured to cut through extrudate to form honeycomb bodies, where the vibratory cutting system comprises a thin, low-inertia cutting element, and one or more sets of fluid bearings configured to mitigate or lessen out of plane vibrations of the cutting element to provide a more stable cutting element. In some examples the vibratory cutting system comprises two sets of fluid bearings arranged at two locations on the cutting element that are configured to mitigate out-of-plane vibrations on the cutting element and between the two locations. In some examples, the cutting element is double-sided to allow for single-sided or double-sided cutting operations.
