    Abstract: A flow restriction device may include a male luer connector portion and a female luer connector portion. The male luer connector portion can define a first lumen and the female luer connector portion can define a second lumen. A flexible tubing preferably provides fluid communication between the first lumen and second lumen. The flexible tubing can be helically wound around a solid core, and the flexible tubing can be helically wound within a hollow chamber. The flexible tubing is configured to increase flow resistance through the tubing to reduce shear stress on the fluid, thereby decreasing the incidence of hemolysis.

    Abstract: A flow restriction device includes a proximal housing configured to couple to a fluid collection device, a distal housing configured to couple to a catheter assembly, an intermediate housing interposed between the proximal and distal housings, an internal fluid channel extending transversely through the proximal, intermediate and distal housings, and a fluid shield device coupled to the distal housing, the fluid shield device comprising a flexible material. The fluid shield device covers an end portion of a male center post of the distal housing in an unconnected position, compresses down the male center post into a groove of the distal housing in a connected position, and recovers the end portion of the male center post to contain fluid within the male center post upon returning to an unconnected position. Blood collection systems and fluid shield devices are also provided.
