Abstract: A downstroke baler comprising a compaction chamber through which a platen is reciprocated vertically by spaced pressure actuated cylinders secured to opposite ends of the platen. The lower end of an actuating rod rests upon a support plate secured to the frame of the baler and a bracket secured to the frame of the baler is positioned adjacent the upper end of the actuating rod to restrain the actuating rod against vertical movement. A sleeve is secured to the platen and slides along the actuating rod such that the actuating rod is maintained perpendicular to the face of the platen. The upper end of the actuating rod is connected through an actuating link to valves secured to the frame of the baler. The valves control a hydraulic circuit connected to the cylinders which raise and lower the platen such that movement of the platen from a horizontal attitude causes the actuating rod to be moved from a vertical attitude thereby changing flow of fluid to the cylinders to return the platen to a horizontal attitude. The rod ends of the cylinders are in continuous communication with the source of pressurized fluid. A valve between the source of pressurized fluid and base ends of the cylinders is shiftable to a first position to direct pressurized fluid to the base ends of the cylinders to elevate the platen and is shiftable to a second position venting base ends of the cylinders to move the platen downwardly.

Abstract: A device for attaching a tab with a central opening and bag receiving passage formed therein in which is gathered the neck of a flexible bag comprising: conveyor means to receive and flatten a portion of the bag adjacent the open end thereof and guide the flattened neck of the bag into the bag receiving passage and gather the bag neck in the tab; a tab strip feed mechanism and means severing each tab singly from the tab strip and positioning and bracing the tab to receive the bag neck; means detecting the completed passage of the bag and in response thereto releasing said tab and bag gathered therein prior to positioning another tab to receive a bag neck; means responsive to the reception of a product thickened bag neck in said conveyor means to cause said tab support means to release said tab prior to detection of completed passage of said bag. Abstract: A horizontal baler comprising a compactor chamber with a compaction end and a discharge end. A bale of material is formed in the compaction end of the chamber as loose material is deposited in the chamber and compressed by a plunger which is reciprocally driven in the chamber by a motor. A first bale is formed in the chamber and tied with wire. The first bale is urged toward the discharge end of the chamber by compression of more material in the chamber to form a second bale. The end of the first bale forms an end wall in the chamber against which loose material is compressed to form another bale. The improvement comprises a plate which is urged into frictional contact with the first bale when the first bale is adjacent the discharge end of the chamber to limit further movement of the first bale in the chamber. More material is compressed by the plunger into the second bale until the density of the second bale has reached a predetermined amount. The bale is automatically tied and the plate disengaged from the first bale to allow the first bale to be discharged from the baler. The second bale is moved toward the discharge end of the chamber.

Abstract: A wire tying device for tying a wire-like ribbon about a neck of a bag moved along a path by a conveyor. The packaging device includes a bag gathering apparatus including a bag clamp plate positioned adjacent the path of the neck of the bag and a plunger which moves along the path to engage the neck of the bag between the clamping mechanism and a slotted face plate for pulling slack out of a plastic bag and to draw to the bag to a control tension about the product. An improved drive mechanism smoothly and rapidly accelerates a needle for wrapping a section of wire ribbon around the neck of the bag, a twister hook for twisting the wire, a wire holder-shear for gripping and cutting the wire ribbon and a striper arm for removing the twisted wire from the twister hook.

Abstract: Apparatus for intermittently dispensing either fragile particulate material, such as sesame seeds, or flaky material, such as bran, through openings in a tube to spread material over an array of spaced rows and columns of a food product in a pan. The dispensing apparatus comprises a hopper from which fragile particulate material is dispensed through a dispensing tube in which a mandrel driven by a reversible variable speed motor is rotatably disposed. The mandrel has spaced spline teeth formed on its outer surface in dispensing sections separated by blocking collars spaced longitudinally of the mandrel such that rotation of the mandrel causes particulate material to be dispensed in parallel columns and such that intermittent rotation of the mandrel causes the columns to be divided to form rows. An outlet passage in the dispensing tube is shaped and positioned to expedite dispensing granular material when the mandrel is rotated in one direction and to dispense flaky material when the mandrel is rotated in the opposite direction. A dispensing chute is formed adjacent the outlet passage to spread material dispensed uniformly over the surface of a food product.
