Abstract: Provided is an apparatus and method for e-mail polling in a portable terminal. In the e-mail polling method, a state of the portable terminal is detected after a predetermined time period of a first timer expires in an idle state after a periodical e-mail polling mode is set in the portable terminal. E-mail polling is performed according to the detected state of the portable terminal. The state of the portable terminal is changed into an idle state after the performance of the e-mail polling.
