摘要:
A screen provides increased erosion resistance and collapse resistance without uneconomical overcompensation and without requiring an increase in the screen's outer diameter. In a preferred embodiment, a sand control screen has a support material radially between a tubular base pipe and a filtering portion. The support material radially outwardly supports the filtering portion to help prevent radially inward collapse of the filtering portion. In another preferred embodiment, a screen has a coating applied to a filtering portion's exterior surface. The coating may alternatively or combinatively provide erosion resistance, radially inwardly retain a support material, and selectively vary flow through the filtering portion.

Methods of completing wells utilizing wellbore equipment positioning apparatus provide repositioning of sand control screens and perforating guns without requiring movement of a packer in the wellbore. In a preferred embodiment, a well completion method includes the steps of lowering a packer, positioning device, sand control screen, and perforating gun into a well, perforating a zone intersected by the wellbore, expanding the positioning device, and positioning the sand control screen opposite the perforated zone.

A service tool for use in completion operations includes a fluid control apparatus therein. The apparatus permits variable regulation of fluid flow downhole, selective opening and closing of multiple fluid ports in the apparatus, protection against overpressurization and communication with the earth's surface. Each of these functions is accomplished by displacing a member of the apparatus with an electromechanical device. In particular, data transmission is performed by displacing the member relative to a fluid port to thereby produce pressure pulses in a fluid flowing therethrough.

A production sub carrying a plurality of annular locator rings is coupled in series relation with downhole production equipment. A collet latch assembly including fixed and floating collet members is connected to a down hole service tool and is inserted into releasable coupling engagement with the annular locator rings of the production sub. Resilient finger portions of the fixed collet are alternately supported and unsupported by the floating collet to establish positive engagement with a selected one of the annular locator rings or to permit passage of the latch assembly with respect to the locator ring. The foregoing arrangement provides positive restriction to longitudinal movement of a work string which allows a downhole service tool attached to the work string to be selectively positioned at predetermined operating locations relative to downhole equipment. Additionally, the positioning assembly provides partial restriction to longitudinal movement of a work string for activating the motion-compensating equipment of a floating service vessel so that ocean heave or swell does not cause excessive longitudinal excursions of a downhole service tool attached to a service string which is supported by the floating vessel.

A proppant slurry screen apparatus and associated method of using it prevent sticking of a service tool during proppant slurry delivery to a subterranean wellbore after failure of a crossover portion of the apparatus. In a preferred embodiment, a proppant slurry screen apparatus has a tubular crossover member with an internal flow passage, circulation port, and side wall outlet openings, first and second coaxial tubular structures, the first tubular structure extending above a packer and having a radial port which provides fluid communication between the wellbore above the packer and an annular flow passage between the first and second tubular structures, and a tubular screen positioned between the first and second tubular structures adjacent the port and operative to screen proppant from the proppant slurry.

A method of deploying a well screen and associated apparatus provide convenient and economical completion operations within subterranean wells. In a disclosed embodiment, a method of positioning a screen includes attaching the screen to a completion string before stimulation operations are performed on a formation. Initially, the screen is spaced apart from the formation. After the stimulation operations are performed, the screen is positioned opposite the formation and packers are set above and below the screen. In order to thus position the screen, a work string is inserted into the completion string, the screen is attached to the work string, and the screen is released from the completion string. After the packers are set, the work string may be retrieved and the formation placed in production. The screen and packers prevent flow of particulate material from the formation into the completion string. Other methods are provided as well.

Gravel slurry is pumped through the longitudinal service bore of a tubular service tool which is extended through a packer mandrel and into the seal bore of a tubular cross-over tool which is disposed in the annulus between the service tool and a well casing. Slurry flow is directed from the service bore through a cross-over flow port of the cross-over tool into the annulus between the cross-over tool and the well casing. The gravel-laden slurry is injected through casing perforations into the surrounding earth formation at a high flow rate. After the fracture operation has been completed, the slurry flow rate is reduced substantially and a gravel pack is accumulated in the annulus between the well screen and the well casing. Slurry liquid is circulated through the well screen into a return flow bore of the service tool. The slurry liquid is then conducted through a longitudinal cross-over flow passage formed through the cross-over tool into a return annulus defined between the service tool and the packer mandrel. The slurry liquid is then conducted through the annulus between the service tool and the well casing to the surface.

A travel joint and latching assembly is connected below a gravel pack service tool to set an isolation assembly while performing backwashing and gravel pack operations, in a single trip. The travel joint is protected against inadvertent expansion by a positive mechanical lock assembly which isolates and decouples mechanical loading forces which may arise during the setting of the packer and during gravel pack operations. Inadvertent set of the hydraulic packer during backwashing operations is prevented by a hydraulic setting tool which includes a shear sleeve and an expandable C-ring drop ball seat.
