An infusion guidewires assemblies and methods are provided that can be used for infusion of fluid at desired location within body lumen of a patient and to facilitate placement of catheters and other devices into a body lumen of a patient. The infusion guidewire assembly includes a guidewire shaft having a distal end, a proximal end and a fluid delivery lumen therethrough. The guidewire assembly further includes an infusion hub adapted to be removably mounted on the proximal end of the guidewire shaft, wherein the hub provides fluid connection to the fluid delivery lumen; and a guidewire coil attached to the distal end of the guidewire shaft. The guidewire shaft of the assembly includes a plurality of infusion ports formed over a distal region proximal to the guidewire coil.

Methods and tools are disclosed for inserting an implant device that treats snoring and apnea of a patient by altering the position of a soft palate. Methods and tools can make an incision in patient's soft and hard palate to create a cavity that can house the implant. The tools can have visually observable markings that can be aligned with the incision, thus controlling the depth of the cavity. A needle having an incision edge can be used to make an incision in patient's soft palate. The needle can be bent into a suitable longitudinal shape to allow easier access and visualization of the process. A blade that makes the cavity in the tissue can be housed inside a channel in the needle. The tools may have stoppers to prevent excessive extension and retraction of the blade thus preventing an excessive cavity depth. Some tools may also house the implant device, which may be implanted after the cavity is formed.

The implant is an implant for stabilizing the tongue, the implant having an anchoring portion for securing a first end of the implant with the mandibula; a control portion connected with the anchoring portion, configured for selectively activating the implant; a flexible portion connected at its proximal end with the control portion, where the flexible portion has three-dimensional flexibility in a first state and where the flexible portion has a lesser three-dimensional flexibility in a second state, and where the flexible portion is selectively switchable between the first and second state by the control portion; an anchoring portion for connecting the implant with the base of the tongue connected with the flexible portion, and a latch mechanism coupled with the control portion and configured to maintain the flexible portion in either of the first and second states. An airway implant device for maintaining and/or creating an opening in air passageways is disclosed. Methods of using the device are also disclosed. The airway implant device comprises an actuator element to control the opening of an air passageway. Preferably the actuator element is an electroactive polymer element. Energizing of the electroactive polymer element provides support for the walls in order to prevent the collapse of an air passageway. Some embodiments of the invention include a sensor capable of sensing the possible occurrence of an apneic event and activating the actuator element of the airway implant device. Some embodiments include a housing designed to conform to the shape of the palate. Some embodiments include an attachment element to secure the device to tissue. Methods of treating airway disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring with the airway implant device are disclosed herein.
