The invention relates to an optoelectronic device comprising a semiconductor laser enclosed in an envelope, an optical fibre coupled to the semiconductor laser, and further coupled to at least one optical isolator and an outgoing optical fibre (pigtail). According to the invention, the semiconductor laser and the optical isolator are each enclosed in a separate module. The laser module mainly provides space to the semiconductor laser and to an optical fibre coupled thereto and ending in a ferrule in a tubular projection of the laser module. The module for the optical isolator is tubular in shape and contains in that order a first graded index lens, an optical isolator, a second graded index lens, and an outgoing optical fibre (pigtail) coupled to this second graded index lens through a ferrule. The tubular projection of the laser module and an end portion of the tubular optical module are so shaped in relation to one another that a mechanical coupling of the two modules can be obtained whereby the optical coupling between the modules is achieved simultaneously.

An inline fiber optic polarization combiner/divider is proposed for use in fiber optic communications. It utilizes a polarizing beam splitting cube (PBSC) or a birefringent displacer located between a pair of collimating lenses. A reflecting film (either external or directly applied to one of the faces of the PBSC or birefringent displacer) is used to completely reflect one of the two polarizations and is positioned such that the optical path length between the lens and the reflecting film is equal to one focal length in order to accomplish an optical path where the input and output optical fibers are in-line with the package.

Optical isolators for use in fiber optic networks utilizing a birefringent wedge set with a Faraday rotator disposed between the birefringent wedges. In a first embodiment a polarization maintaining optical isolator is disclosed which will maintain the polarization of the light which passes through it in a forward direction and block light in the reverse direction. In a second embodiment a single polarization optical isolator is disclosed which will pass only a single linear polarization of the light in a forward direction and block any light in the reverse direction.

A compact inline fiber optic polarization splitter/combiner for use in fiber optic communications. The splitter/combiner uses two birefringent wedges aligned with their optical axis at 90° from each other and their bases disposed oppositely to each other. One lens is used at the input to couple light from the input fiber. A single output lens is used to couple light into two adjacent polarization maintaining fibers. When used as a combiner a beam of a first linear polarization state from one input fiber is combined with a beam of second linear polarization state from a second input fiber into a third output fiber carrying both beams. The splitter/combiner also provides for the ready alignment of the input and output beams further saving cost and complexity.

Inline optical circulators utilizing birefringent displacers to split an incoming beam into two orthogonally polarized beams and thereafter to recombine the beams. The birefringent displacers are used in combination with non reciprocal devices (Faraday rotators), reflectors and waveplates and serve to route a signal serially to the next port. Specific embodiments utilize birefringent wedges which provide circulators with reduced component counts and simplified alignment of the components. Circulators which do not utilize waveplates, and thus are relatively wavelength insensitive, are also described.

Conductors (22), for example connection pins (220) to which the component (3) is connected, project from the module (1). Such a module (1) forms a reliable and effective component-glass fiber coupling and is suitable for use in optical glass fiber communication systems. The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing such a device (10).
