Abstract: A hydraulic mount for automotive engine and powertrain applications includes an elastomer body, a base and a partition interposed the body and the base to form a fluid-pumping chamber and a reservoir. Circumferentially spaced axial extending holes or slots or an annular orifice track are formed in the partition together with a magnetic coil operable to impose a magnetic field on the holes, slots or orifice track to control the shear properties of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid in the pumping chamber and reservoir. An elastomeric decoupler member is in communication with at least one of the pumping chamber and the reservoir to reduce the mount dynamic stiffness for isolating low-displacement relatively high-frequency vibrations. Vibrations of multiple frequencies may be isolated by tuning the mount with a controller.

Abstract: A magnetostrictive strain sensor includes a Hall effect sensor for measuring the change in magnetic flux a magnetic circuit including a magnetostrictive element. A strain sensing apparatus includes one or more magnetic elements defining a magnetic circuit having a gap, and including a magnetostrictive element adapted to receive a load force. A Hall effect sensor is disposed within the gap for sensing a change in magnetic flux in the magnetic circuit. The Hall effect sensor may include a programmable circuit for zeroing and calibrating the sensing apparatus, and for providing temperature compensation. The magnetostrictive element may be magnetized to form the magnetized element, and may be formed from material known as TERFENOL-D.

Abstract: A system and method of controlling engine vibration mounted within a vehicle including at least one hydraulic mount, each mount including a fluid chamber. A pair of accelerometers sense relative acceleration across the mount between the engine and the frame and generate a relative acceleration signal. A control unit is electrically connected to the accelerometers. The control unit is adapted to generate an electronic control signal in response to the relative acceleration signal. The control device is responsive to the electric control signal for controlling the damping force of the hydraulic mount. A control algorithm calibrates the control unit such that maximum vibration damping occurs at and around the engine resonance bounce frequency.
