Apparatus for insertion of intraocular lenses into the eye are disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a loading chamber and an injection portion. The loading chamber has a proximal end and a distally extending opening. The loading chamber defines a first lumen and is adapted to receive an intraocular lens in an unfolded state at the distally extending opening and to fold the intraocular lens and maintain the intraocular lens folded as the intraocular lens is placed in the first lumen. The injection portion defines a second lumen aligned with the first lumen and is adapted to receive the folded intraocular lens from the first lumen in the second lumen. The injection portion has an open distal end through which the folded intraocular lens from the second lumen passes to be inserted into an eye.

In addition, a tube is provided, fixed to the sealing gasket and protruding therefrom, for enabling engagement between the tube and a pump head for circulation of fluid through flow channels. A second plate is provided for applying a sealing pressure between the sheet and the first plate. A thin tip phaco needle is provided including a body having a longitudinal bore for enabling passage of debris from a surgical site, a threaded end for engaging an ultrasonic probe handpiece, and a tip, disposed at a distal end of the body, for cutting tissue. The tip includes a beveled, or stepped, edge having a wide proximal wall and a thin, distal, cutting wall of about half a width of the wide wall. The beveled edge functions to enhance cutting efficiency of the tip and increase force pressure by the tip on tissue such as to decrease ultrasonic energy required to cause the needle to penetrate hard tissue. The needle tip may be angled so as to define a cutting plane having a wide upper arc and a thin lower arc.

Apparatus for inserting intraocular lenses (IOLs) into eyes are disclosed. The apparatus comprises an insertion tube, and an injector rod having a distal tip capable of engaging an intraocular lens. A rotating assembly is provided to controllably rotate the rod as it moves distally through the insertion tube. The rotation of the injector rod is imparted to the IOL in such a manner that the IOL is also rotated as it moves through the insertion tube. The degree of rotation of the IOL is controlled to place the IOL in an orientation for final implantation in the eye with reduced risk of damaging the eye. Methods for inserting an IOL into an eye using such apparatus are also disclosed and are within the scope of the present invention.

Such sleeve includes a hollow elongated sleeve portion with at least one fluid outlet at or near its distal end portion, and a hub secured to the sleeve portion and adapted to receive at least a portion of the surgical instrument. The present sleeve is made of one or more organic polymeric materials and provides substantial benefits, e.g., providing effective fluid seals and being non-irrigating in use, and being disposable after use.

Phacoemulsification apparatus includes a handpiece having a needle and electrical apparatus for ultrasonically vibrating the needle. A power source provides electrical power to the handpiece electrical apparatus and irrigation fluid is provided to the handpiece needle and aspirated therefrom during phacoemulsification. Temperature sensors are provided for determining the temperature of the handpiece needle and a control unit is provided for varying a power level provided the handpiece electrical apparatus and the power source in response to the needle temperature. Alternatively, the control unit functions to vary either irrigation fluid flow or aspiration fluid flow from the handpiece in response to the needle temperature.
