    摘要: Methods and apparatus treat the lens capsule so as to increase accommodation of the eye. The treatment of the lens capsule may comprise treating a portion of the lens capsule so as to stiffen the treated portion and improve accommodation of the eye. The intermediate portion of the lens capsule may located between an optically used central portion of the lens capsule and a peripheral portion of the lens capsule connected to zonules of the eye. The stiffened intermediate portion of the lens capsule can improve coupling of the peripheral portion of the lens capsule to the central portion of the lens capsule, such that an amount of accommodation of the optically used central portion of the lens is increased. As the force of the lens capsule to a lens disposed within the lens capsule is increased, the lens may comprise the natural lens of the eye or an artificial lens such as an accommodative IOL. The treatment of the eye to stiffen the intermediate portion may comprise application of one or more of an energy or a substance to the intermediate portion.

    摘要: The accommodative properties of the natural lens of an eye, which tend to degrade with age, can be enhanced, restored, or otherwise improved using the in situ treatment techniques and methodologies provided here. One exemplary method of enhancing accommodative properties of the natural lens of an eye involves an initial step of specifying treatment areas of the natural lens. These treatment areas correspond to regions of the capsular bag or regions of the crystalline lens. The method continues by increasing stiffness of the treatment areas while all or portions of the natural lens remains in situ. This results in stiffened areas of the natural lens that enhance transfer of ciliary muscle forces to a center region of the crystalline lens.

The optic has an anterior face and an opposing posterior face that are configured to provide a lens power. In response to an ocular force of the eye, the haptic transmits a force that alters one or more of a shape of the optic and an axial thickness of the optic. The protruding portion of the haptic has a refractive index that is equal to a refraction index of the optic for at least one a wavelength within the visible spectrum.

In one such lens, the lens structure comprises an anterior element coupled to the anterior optic and a posterior element coupled to the posterior optic. The anterior and posterior elements are coupled to one another at a peripheral region of the intraocular lens. The intraocular lens may also includes a projection extending anteriorly from the posterior element that limits posterior motion of the anterior optic so as to maintain a minimum separation between anterior optic and an anterior surface of the posterior optic.

    摘要: An intraocular lens for providing accommodative vision includes an adjustable optic and a haptic that is operably coupled to the optic. The adjustable optic comprises a central zone and an annular zone surrounding the central zone. The optic may also comprise additional annular zones. The haptic comprises a transparent portion protruding into the adjustable optic. The intraocular lens has a disaccommodative configuration in which the central zone has a base optical power and an accommodative configuration in which the central zone has an add optical power that is at least about 1 Diopter greater than the base optical power. The central zone and the annular zone have different optical powers when the adjustable intraocular lens is in the accommodative configuration and/or when the adjustable intraocular lens is in the disaccommodative configuration.

    摘要: An apparatus for sizing an intraocular lens and/or an ocular region of the eye of a subject, such as the anterior chamber, contains a sizing device and a measurement device. In one embodiment, the sizing device comprises a first leg having a first contact portion for operably engaging the ocular portion and a second leg having a second contact portion for operably engaging the ocular portion. The sizing device has a test geometry when placed within the ocular portion. The measurement device is adapted for determining a dimension of the sizing device based at least in part on the test geometry. The sizing device may also have a reference geometry when the sizing device in a reference condition. In certain embodiments, the difference between the reference geometry and the test geometry may be used for sizing the intraocular lens and/or the ocular portion.

    摘要: An intraocular lens is disclosed, with an optic that changes shape in response to a deforming force exerted by the zonules of the eye. A haptic supports the optic around its equator and couples the optic to the capsular bag of the eye. The region of contact between the optic and the haptic extends into the edge of the optic, similar to the interface between a bicycle tire and the rim that holds it in place. The haptic may be stiffer than the optic. The haptic may have the same refractive index as the optic. The haptic may include a saddle-shaped portion in contact with the adjustable optic, with a convex profile along an optical axis; and a concave profile in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis.
